Best Overlocking / affordable 3rd Gen CPU?

Thread Starter
Im selling my i7 950, and am looking for a no headache easy OCer from the new generation of CPU. Something along the lines of the 2500k's from the previous gen. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and furthermore, please give me a comparison in terms of performance differences in Autocad rendering / gaming from what I already have. (i7 950 @ 3.99ghz) Thank you!

Both the new Ivy Bridge CPUs don't overclock as well as the previous Sandy Bridge. However, they do still overclock very well, and very easily. They run a little warmer, but nothing too much. I would recommend either the 3770k, or, the cheaper i5 3570k.

yeah quite simply the i5-3570k and the i7-3770k

My suggestion is, I just bought this two days ago, the i7-3770k. Oh shoot frown.gif the tigerdirect deal went away. It was $250. I would suggest waiting a couple days and seeing if you can find it for that price again.

Otherwise, a $220~ 3570k is the exact same thing in games with the exception of games like BF3, Planetside 2, etc. (the big thread junkies)

i upgraded from the 3570k cuz it was almost the same price. Giving the 3570k to a friends build smile.gif

The Ivy Bridges don't overclock QUITE as well as the Sandy's.. but are slightly faster so it's a wash.

I had my 3570k at 4.5ghz and now my 3770k sits at 4.6ghz. I could put them both up a few 100 more mhz.. but I am using a Corsair A70 and don't need to push them too hard.

Overclocking was easy as pie with the Asrock Z77 Extreme 4.. definitely the best "budget" mobo in the Z77 batch.

If you live near a microcentre, they have some insane deals on 3770k / 3570k right now. Worth a look if you can.

Sadly I am in Canada and the nearest Microcenter is.. well quite far away. Thank you for all your replies, I do quite a bit of rendering and work with Cad so I think I'll be leaning towards the 3770k. Too bad I missed out on black friday, might have to sit til xmas without a processor frown.gif Thanks again!
