How does Asrock do this ? XFast !

Thread Starter
Hi,

I just tried XFast USB for a minute and transfer performance really did go up.

In benchmarks :

XFast USB On

XFast USB Off

Real world performance also went up :

Transfer speed from a Samsung 830 128GB SSD to an external USB3.0 Samsung 830 128GB SSD:

XFast USB On : 182MB/s
XFast USB Off : 107MB/s

That's an impressive increase.

I wonder what the mechanics behind this are ? Is Asrock overclocking something or is it pre-caching stuff ? I don't know, do you ? smile.gif

Thanks !

Probably copies whatever Asus does with USB 3.0 Boost. It uses UASP, or USB Attached SCSI Protocol.

Weird enough, Windows 8 should use it by default... (that's Windows 8 on screenshots, right?)

Is there any way for it to stay out of the way though? I ended up uninstalling it because the crappy app got annoying.

Ok so I figured it out.

Basically, USB 3.0 Turbo and USB 3.0 UAS are different things.

Turbo uses an increased transfer block size (which you can change with regedit).

While UAS uses a combination of optimized hard- and firmware to achieve higher speeds. This does not have to be enabled with some voodoo software and if you own Windows 8 and a UAS supporting Motherboard, it should work out of the box. (you can check this out by going into device manager and looking for UAS in the USB section)

I don't have UAS (which is slightly better) so I'll be using USB 3.0 Turbo.

This is what I did :

I went into the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\usbstor\054C00C1)
and added a 32bit DWORD value, I named it MaximumTransferLength and set the value to 2097120

Now I have the same Turbo that Asrock uses without having XFast USB installed !

Do we have to use the 32bit DWORD on a 64-bit OS or should we use the QWORD? Coz on this blog it says to use according to your OS. AND it also asks to install windows update kb2581464

Kindly check it out and give your thoughts.
