GTX 480 and Planetside 2 - Page 5

I didn't see anyone mention it in here yet but the biggest things that helped me were editing the C:\Users\Public\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\Planetside 2\UserOptions.ini file (Under [Rendering] set Render distance to 1000 [not -1.000 or whatever it is now] or less--the lower the better FPS, but less distance you can see enemies.) and overclocking my CPU. Don't feel too bad, the game just hates AMD CPU's and is even fairly poor on my Intel rig (considering the speed). I'm running an FX-8120 @ 4.5ghz and x-fire 7970's to keep myself above 30fps in really busy areas with lots of action.

Almost nothing else I did seemed to help. Some people mentioned Unparking their CPU cores, I did that as well but I am not sure how much it helped.

I've done both those things except I set distance to 3000. guess i can try 2000

I did 3000 at first and ended up having issues, so I dropped it down to 1000 (while simultaneously overclocking) and had a huuuuge impact. Even at 1000, you should be fine render-wise so long as you don't plan on flying too much.

so my corsair h100i just died. I played planetside 2 at stock and surprisingly it was still ok. I'm gonna do a quick playthrough and post a fraps benchmark. I'm gonna go to the most intense battles while I'm at it.

Patch today improved my FPS from 30 to 40. hope i can get some more in later patches.

a 2-3 year old CPU will not run PS2 at anything higher than 20 fps in huge fights. Video cards mean almost nothing in this game (within reason of course smile.gif ).

The custom ini file I use:
http://pastebin.com/6j9aHVav#

I switched off FoG and motion blur. Should get the same FPS but it looks way better. Some people have also seen improvements from this.

Also if you haven't allready:

This is supposed to be a free to play game. Free to play games generally run on 5-7 year old PCs. PS2 is DX 9, its horribly optimized. Age of my processor has nothing to do with it. 3.8ghz 6 core...... think about that for a second.

The number of cores and the clockspeed of those cores is about as useful as a warm class of spit. The architecture is critically important. Phenom II just isn't able to push Planetside 2 very well.
