Which Conroe?

Thread Starter
I am currently looking at getting a Conroe processor, as I have been for a while. I want to know which will overclock further on air. I am not talking about price/performance ratio, I just want to know which will overclock further. I have heard conflicting reports on how far people have gotten them to go. Some say they can get the E6700 past 4.0 GHz on air, but others say they don't go much past 3.0 GHz on air. So, which goes further, the E6600 or the E6700? What are the maximum values? I will be using a Tuniq Tower 120 with Arctic Silver 5 for cooling. Also, if I could get the X6800 for about $700 (a definate possibility at the moment), would it be worth it as far as having the unlocked multiplier to overclock better?

If you have the cash, go for the E6700, it will scale higher than the E6600 because of its x10 multi, so let's say you're doing a 334fsb which mine does fine 24/7, I'm at 3.0ghz while the E6700 will be at 3.33ghz, a 333mhz increase but....

To me it's not worth the extra $200 for 333mhz more.

4.0ghz on air? The e6700 could reach that speed but you're talking in the 1.60v for core and that's not a territory I'm stepping into. 1.40v max for me.

The 4.0 GHz was probably just a typo on the review I read then. Either that or I'm dislexic and thought "phase" was "air". I take it the X6800 isn't worth the unlocked multiplier, even at $700?

A 4.0ghz out of an E6700 is much possible on air with a Tuniq Tower 120. I've seen several E6600 at 400x9 speed with a Tuniq but the thing is that, at that setting, the voltage required is way, way, way up there for me to even consider running which is a 1.60v (-/+ 0.5),

Well what about the X6800 price I mentioned?

Well, personally I'll never buy nor recommend a $500+ CPU, and I, myself will never buy a CPU that cost more than $350, except for this C2D I paid $30 more than my limit because I got caught up in the hype of it.

So, $700 it's no-no for me but if you have the cash and are willing to, go for it. Although I would wait for the QX6400 which is a Quad-Core 2.40ghz and that could be the price range for it.

In all, I will say the E6700 if you can't wait and want to get a great CPU that will easily get to high frequency or the E6600 which is easy to overclock and be able to hit 3.20ghz which is not bad but a little less than what the E6700 would get to.

But for $700, I'd say wait for the QX6400 and go from there, and with that P5W-DH, you could easily OC all 4 cores to 3.20ghz easy, but with a Tuniq Tower 120. Never the stock cooler, I wouldn't risk it that high.

I'd say go for the e6600, from the database of another forum, the e6600 has done quite well for itself. There has only been 3-4 case of 4ghz...only 1 of them on air. The 4ghz imho would be nothing more than bragging rights....

as far as i have seen, the e6600 and e6700 scale to about the same clocks under air. I think someone tested both and they both topped out around 3.9ghz.
So on that note I would get the e6600 cus it is 200USD cheaper.

edit: most e6600 will do at least 3.3-3.4 with 1.4v unless you get a bad one. If you are lucky, you may get something that'll do 3.6 at 1.4v and almost 3.8 at 1.5 volts. My e6600 should be considered average, cus it does 3.6ghz at 1.51v after droop.

When is the QX6400 coming out? The QX6800 didn't result in a price drop so I doubt the QX6400 will amount to much of one. No one has come out with a price scheme for intel with that quad core's release?
