Looking to build myself a DAC

Thread Starter
So right now I have a asus essence STX and a pair of AKG q701s, and that has pretty much been my main audio setup for quite some time. The reason I haven't dumped 2K into my audio setup is primarily because I have been happy with what I had....up until now.

The entire time I have been using my setup I have noticed a faint electrical noise. I thought it might have been my own paranoia, and eventually I got used to it. The other day I tried to expand my music library to include some new music, and I started to notice the electrical noise again.

I started to run a bunch of tests and sure enough it is indeed my sound card.

I was thinking about possibly building a DAC that would allow my sound card to process the sound, and then through the optical port connect it to a DAC to clean the sound up a bit.

I would like to build it to save some money, and I am not in the mood to spend more than 100 bucks. When spring comes I will have a few jobs and I will focus more on getting some high end stuff.

I would like to see what you guys would recommend for a dac build that would make a noticeable difference in sound quality.
