[ArsTechnica] Level capping truly, unapologetically sucks - Page 6

I would not play a game that has endless level cap..

What I am against however, is MMO's that offer free to play option but caps your level to something pathetic and pointless.

Like I love Warhammer Online, but the Level cap for free player is at the VERY Bottom of the RvR Tier 2, meaning U SUCK SO BAD ....
Orignally it capped like 1 or 2 levels before the Tier 1 RVR Zone cap (lvl 11 or 12 I forgot was the zone cap, after that u were stuck in the next zone)

Actually, player's in Tibia usually give up the game before reaching extremely high levels... I played the game for almost 6 years so I know what I'm talking.
Reaching level 100 would take arround a year if you are the average player, while other's have reached it within two weeks with power leveling and 24/7. I really mean 24/7.

At level 100 you could already kill and do pretty much anything in the game, depending on class it would be easier or harder. And if you grouped up you have everything in your favor.

These high level person's are not a person playing it, it's an automated client controlling the character or 5 or 6 owners in the same account.
I used to script for a bot in that game and people would pay me up to 50$ per custom script. Was awesome... Good income tongue.gif
But all the botters started getting banned from the game.
There are still some, last person I remember was a level 450 Elite Knight... He was a BR called Lord Paulistinha, botter and a community moderator rolleyes.gif
Eventually Cipsoft decided to drop the banhammer on him... Youtube and the game forums were filled with video's of him botting.

It's not even level capping that's the issue. It's just that themepark MMORPGs (because nobody dares release a sandbox because it's not like WOW) just suck pure ass now. They're hold your hand, free rides to max level in 1-2 months of casual play. I might as well just buy a good single player game instead.

That argument is solid and thats why most games are set this way. Level caps don't mean anything since most games really start at end-level. I played a wast number of mmorpgs since 1997 and thats just how it works. Take WoW for example, since its widely known, 2 people both can be level 90, now imagine one casual player wearing uncommon/rare items who just hit 90 2 weeks ago, then a level 90 hardcore obsessed player with epic/legendary gear because he played all day and raided to the moon and back. There is a huge difference, so even tho your character stops levelling you items still get better, which in the end gives you more atrributes, skills, health etc so you get far more superior than a casual people at the same level because you play more, you raid more, you pvp more etc etc...

Casual players can't even raid, because there is usually a minimum gear-score system that prevents people with "ok" gear joining in most raids. Even if they can somehow join, the hardcore players who play all day have more "dkp" to get all the good stuff. So there is really nothing to complain about regarding to level caps. I'd rather have more content to go through and quests that are not repetetive and plain stupid, fix the imbalance between classes/races and have more item sets so that people wouldnt look all the same.

Leveling is todays way of adding depth to MEH games.
Leveling itself, IMO, sucks. Build the game around combat and mechanic depth, give me the tools and let me kill.

was probably 14 at the time and i didn't know about any guides that suggested leveling to 255, I just grinded a lot on the little **** and hoped that would be enough to get me to the next level to kill the next boss.

I love star ocean and since then i've finished the remakes of 1 and 2 and also the newest one on xbox which wasnt all that great i hope they make a new one soon.

YES! Overpowered in BG and IW is the way to go. anyone in favor of a levelcap should do this, kensai/sorc or just a cavalier powerhouse.

It isn't easy to pull off but I like games with limited leveling or no leveling. If possible I like games that build on skill of the players as they progress through the game with a greater variety of gear that can be found, brought, crafted, stolen or traded. Limited space with in game space upgrades through housing or apartments that can be rented brought and traded. Gear should have durability that weakens upon repair at a rate that depends on the material used to design it.

In place of levels would be skill progression that increases slowly, speeds up and slowly starts to hit diminishing returns. If you don't use said skills much the progression drops. Skills can be shelf taught, clan, books and trained by other players. Imagine having a guild and hiring a trainer to come by and train your guildes. Not instantly learned but more of a cross between assassin creed and shenmue.

If done right this game has potential.

Tons of reasons why games are "uncapped"

1.) PvP

2.) Raids

3.) Ability to bring back player that quit since if there's no cap, people will quit and never have a reason to come back

4.) Allows new features every few month instead of using it all at once

5.) Chance to level multiple characters/classes/etc

6.) Ability to have end game

If you have no level cap, people will play until they're bored/game feels repetitive and quit with no reason to come back.
