[ArsTechnica] Level capping truly, unapologetically sucks - Page 7

Nowhere does the article state that this applies to MMO's alone. No real reason to lvl limit in a single player game.

Really no reason not to, though. This complaint about "did everything" still happens whether or not you can lvl 4ever. It's more a complaint about running out of content.

I for one would like to see the dynamic world generation concept pioneered by JADE and others to change the world and quests every time you start a new game. This way you aren't demanding developers to be endless slaves to their creations and are still getting new content.

I dislike the concept when applied to online FPS games, it's kind of stupid. You shouldn't get better simply by just playing, regardless if you actually try learn or whatever. You should get better alone, as some games have weapon combinations that are just evil. I currently hate when BLOPS2 players can noobishly use certain guns. Without any skill you see SMGs dominate the entire field, to be good you either learn to use those or the shotguns for a lot of maps.

This idea that games should have uncapped leveling seems a little odd to me. In addition to inviting all sorts of balance issues, it eliminates the possibility for any meaningful or balanced end game. Grinding for the sake of grinding, with no destination in sight. Rather than climbing up a mountain in hopes of getting to the top, you're climbing an endless vertical wall that extends to infinity.

I don't know about anyone else, but if the so called motivation for playing is character building, and the end result of building my character is that I get to later build my character further in a never ending cycle, I'm most likely going to realize the game is pointless move on to something else pretty quick. Before anyone says that's all you do in RPGs anyway, I disagree. The world, the lore, the content can all be enjoyable and worth playing. I would sooner play a game with no levels and fun, balanced content than one with endless levels and an infinite illusion of "progress."

The casual gamer that works 5-6 days a week or even the student that cannot spend more than 2-3H a day (that's a lot for someone with family etc), should be able to also enjoy a game along with kids and youngsters that play 12H a day or more...the latter can easily grind their way to "uncapped" levels, but that would ruin the balance with more casual gamers.

I do like the Eve Online's leveling system, but it is also aided by the games deep content in many areas. I have played the game for 6 years before leaving it for the last 8 months, and I would say I had much to learn as far as both piloting skills, tactics, market, manufacturing etc...being a PvP player with 3 chars and a total of around 240M SPs. WoW was an insult back then as far as depth would go.

I would be fine if you had an uncapped SP mode, where people could sit down and burn themselves grinding, but for a MMO, it would be a deal-breaker for any serious gamer.
Guess most ppl above 12 yo would get why by now.

I keep trying to form some type of argument but I think I'm just going in circles around: Depends on the game. There's a lot more to a game than just their level system.

To me leveling, especially in FPS multiplayer, as such truly, unapologetically sucks.

I'm so oldschool, I even remember the times where having fun by just playing the game was possible. These modern "RPG element" ridden games feel like on life support. Take it off and fun dies. Haha, I laugh at thee!

It helps people that keep playing a game that in-itself might be great, to feel like they are making progress even when they don't, as in most games grinding money or exp or w/e is an almost passive, repetitive pve process. Without those aspects, people that do not get the game mechanics early enough, would feel like they - personally - truly, unapologetically suck. Borrowing the OP's title.

Now you have something to look ahead to.
X games, Y skill points, Z months since I've started etc.
