Upgrading from 550TI

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I just sold my 550ti and I'm not sure what to replace it with. I've been looking at Nvidia's 650ti offerings or a Radeon 6870. I'm trying to stay under $150 for the upgrade. Both of these cards come in +/- $10 for my target. Can any of you offer suggestions as to which card would be better? Or another model that would offer better price to performance in the sub 150 category.

Thanks guys.

a cheap 6950 or 6970. Picked up my DirectCu II version 6950 for $149 but it was because it was EOL and the last one in stock.

Yeah.. It's getting harder to find the 6000 series. AMD seems to be only offering a few models to pair with their APUs. Ive used mostly NVIDIA cards in the past, but I've been reading AMD offers better price to performance so I may look into 7000 series.

I would recommend you a 7870/7850 dependant on the flexabity of your budget. I see you are in America? So maybe a 7770 as your budget is in $.

the performance difference between what you get for 150 and what you get for 170 - 190 is huge. get a HD 7850 (2 GB).

Powercolor PCS+ HD 7850 2GB (1 Ghz) - 195
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131472

this card even at stock 1 Ghz speeds matches GTX 660. can be overclocked to 1.2 Ghz and matches or beats GTX 580. massive upgrade from your GTX 550 Ti.comes with farcry 3 game. if you don't want it sell it and bring your cost down.

another option is the Powercolor HD 7850 1GB for 170 bucks. comes with farcry 3 game.

Really? A 580? I find that hard to believe.

I'm a little limited by my PSU as well. I bought a Seasonic 550w Modular Gold psu and now I don't have much wiggle room as to which card I can upgrade to. I'm thinking of the 7770. Is this a comprable card to the 550ti ?

the best card for your needs is undoubtably the gtx 650 ti for $140. its faster than 7770 and almost twice as fast as 550 ti. its a heavily recommended card within your budget. its same level as a 6870 thumb.gif
