Pump + fan controller

Thread Starter
i want my pump on a fan controller. but just recently i was wondering how it's done. first time watercooling but i have read alot of people putting their pump on a fan controller for noise issues.

http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/Laing-DDC-1-Ultra-Pump-600-Lhr-18W-MCP355--DDC-1-T-pid-3179.html

this is my current pump of choice i noticed it said "3 pin RPM Monitoring Sensor Wire" does that meen putting that 3 pin fan cable onto the fan controller i can vary the RPM? if not does that mean i need a PWM Pump and compatible controller?

this is my current fan controller of choice:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BB-008-LP&groupid=701&catid=2331&subcat=189

3 pin compatible only, so if i need to go PWM pump and controller i'm thinking this controller:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BB-007-AK&campaign=pcm/googleshopping&pup_c=gs

and this pump:

http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/Swiftech-MCP35X-PWM-DDC-18W-Pump--MCP35X-pid-13437.html

but then my next question for that pump would be. does anyone know if i can put an after market pump top on. such as this one:

http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/EK-14-Thread-Laing-DDC-CSQ-X-Top--Plexi-pid-16016.html

I wouldn't try it.
I'm no expert on this, I'm a newbie. But as far as I know, if the pump doesn't come with a low noise adapter of some sort, don't adjust the volts.

In answer to your first question, yes you can put a pump on a fan controller. There are a few issues you need to be aware of:

Firstly pumps draw a lot more power than fans. Make sure that your fan controller can handle the pump power. For the DDC you are looking at 18W, the FC9 controller you have picked out can manage up to 50W per channel so you have plenty of head room there.

Secondly is that pumps need a certain minimum voltage to start spinning. You may be able to turn the fan controller down to 5V after the pump is started, but it won't start up until it reaches ~7V. Keep that in mind when you set your pump level.

Thirdly is that is becomes very possible to accidentally turn your pump off. A good safeguard against this would be to plug the pump RPM wire into a motherboard fan header, preferably the CPU fan, and monitor the RPM. You can use several programs to monitor the fan speed and either alarm or shut down on failure.

In answer to your second question - yes that pump top will fit. Any DDC pump top will fit and DDC pump (this includes the Koolance PMP-400 and Swiftech MCP series). Be aware that running a pump top on a very low restriction loop can cause the pump to draw more power (the power draw goes up with flow rate), so allow for that when picking a controller. It can also cause the pump to generate more heat in the driver, so making sure that the bottom of the pump is ventilated, or at least not insulated, becomes more important.

a nice detailed answer, although i never actually asked if i can put a pump on a fan controller. i always knew you could.

i know about power requirements and compatibility.

but when you got onto the second question. that did help. thank you.

Common consensus is that putting an after market top on the MCP35X is a waste of money, and voids the warranty for no reason. The top already on the pump is regarded as one of the best, so why spend extra money and void your warranty?

well that would mainly be for aesthetics dude. but i'm just gona get the Laing DDC-1+ Ultra Pump 600 L/hr pump now since i know all i need is a 4pin molex female to 3 pin female fan adapter. problem is finding one. i would like one around 12" from a trustworthy site UK based or that will ship to UK for acceptable shipping fees.

When running a DDC pump from a fan controller, make sure the watts per channel are higher than the pump at startup, else the pump will not even turn on. The Laing DDC-1T 10W@12VDC can usually run with a majority of fan controllers and most MB via the CPU fan header.

The DDC-3 series of 18W@12VDC tends to require a heavy duty fan controller to drive it. These fan controllers are more expensive.

If a person wants to control the pump speed, a 10W pump offers more options.

FYI -> A 10W pump runs much cooler than the 18W pump
