Overclocking noob, basic questions quick

Thread Starter
I'm new to overclocking but I'm starting to require it due to some Vmware I'm using and the processing it requires.
I bought a Hyper Evo 212. At idle it runs about 35-38 C @ stock frequency.

I just went into BIOS and changed the multiplier (Gigabyte z68 board) to 38X on my i5-2500k so I'm running 3.8ghz. Under load with my VMwares and browser, etc. the CPU usage is hovering around 50-75%. If I open up anything else, I'm sure it'll crash or something. Temps under this load is around 50-55 C.

Can I go higher?
is it possible to go 4.5ghz or something close to that with the Hyper Evo 212 air cooler? basically the simple guide to OC is to raise the frequency slowly, stress it and see if anything gets too hot or crashes. If crash, bump up the voltage and watch temps. And do this over and over until you find the max. Sound about right?

Can someone tell me what the i5-2500k + z68 board can handle pretty safely? I dont want to stress test all day so instead of finding "the max", Id like a good starting point to where it would be reasonably safe and a good number to start testing. 3.8? 4.2? 3.8 seems fine but no prime95 tested yet. Can I start it off at 4.2 with stock voltage or is that too ambitious?

Any help appreciated, ever overclocked before. Also, I'm guessing high 60c is the watch point for this CPU right?

run intel burn test for 10-50runs on normal. if it passes, go up another 100mhz and try again. Thats a decent cooler you have. keep your temps below 72c if u wanna follow intel's advice. oh and 1.425v.
EDIT : here's club for your mb.

Awesome thanks I'll be giving that a shot.

oh and grab cpu-z for volltages, clocks etc. http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html and HWMonitor for temps. http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
Good luck thumb.gif

max temp you want on a 2500k is 98*. needless to say, no one wants it that hot. keep it under 80* and youre good. real world use wont even come close to 80*
you can probably go 4.5ghz and keep both temps and voltage low.

okay so the reason why i need to OC is cause I'm trying to use VMware and with 2 virtual machines running the CPU hovers around 50-70% without ANYTHING else open. If i open chrome or try to do a thing here or there, programs end up freezing. It's driving me crazy.

CPU-Z is showing the cpu clock at 34X or sometimes 35X while the desktop gadget cpu monitor shows a clock of 3601mhz. I dont understand why programs will freeze and CPU will hit 100% when it's not even using the speed I set it at. Isn't stock turbo 3.7ghz? I set it to 3.8ghz and it's maxing out at 34 or 36 whichever program is right.

Do your home work as pc-illiterate advice to you and then report here: I done this and this according this and this manual and happened this and this. To stop this I try this and this .........biggrin.gif
OC is a complex work and definitely doesn't belong in group of one click . So take your time (not our)
1. Make proper buck up
2. Print out manual suggested to you here
3. Find on e-net explanations for all unknown definitions mentioned in manual
4. Try some settings and, before reporting here, please fill up rig builder here

Hm I dont really understand what you're saying but despite reading, there are little idiosyncrasies, terminologies and general conceptual things that someone who's never overclocked has to learn. I'm reading like 5 different guides but the whole reason I posted is that each guide says something different.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18338090

I am following this one for now.

I would like to ask few simple questions.
Why did he turn off CPU thermal monitor? Does that turn CPU temperature sensor off? Is turbo power limit and core current limit at 300 safe? mine is set at 95 stock.

Right questions for one nob thumb.gif
I will call this an bad decision. This CPU thermal monitor is there to protect CPU from overheating. DO NOT TURN OFF THERMAL PROTECTION - (there is only one reason for that -> if you try to find out wot is max temperature for your CPU ) kookoo.gif
Any how welcome to OC jungle. There is no rules (except to be polite) and for the beginning just one advice - memorize max recommended temperature and max VCore for your CPU and whatever you do always monitor those with software like CPUz and Core temp. Those data you will find on intel.com
About those manuals -> if you do like I advice above fills free to test any of settings mentioned in those manuals. That's all about OC -> try and get conclusions - no one can help you with that thumb.gif
