Getting Boinc set up

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Well I've been trying to setup boinc successfully now for a few days and the lack of sleep trying to find a guide that isn't two years old is making my head spin.

I can easily install the client and add a few projects but no matter what I do I can't get more than one WU going on my GPU. I have a 7950 and if I use 7.0.28 or newer I can't even get boinc to recognize my gpu. If I use 6.12.34 it will run one WU on milkyway@home. I've tried 6-7 different app_info files but it either makes no difference or I get validation inconclusive for every WU it finishes and it still is only crunching one WU at a time. I've tried every ati driver suite I can find on the net and I'm currently running 12.10.

I'm currently running boinc version 6.12.34 and with one WU on milkyway@home my 7950 is at 3% GPU usage. I figure I should be able to run at least 4 WU and there is definitely enough queued up for it to crunch. I have poem@home running 8 WU on my 3770k and while its not a very high PPD it at least works for me.

Any advice, help or anything in between would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

Where did you place the app_info.xml ?
Does it report your system as an anonymous platform ?
What values are used within the app_info ?

Can you paste it into your reply, as version numbers and variables need setting to suit.

dunx

P.S. More info on your system will be helpful too !

Thanks for the reply.

While I was eating supper I reread a few posts that I read last night and finally figured out what line of the app_info file I needed to edit and I finally have my gpu doing 4 WU. Stupid lack of sleep. Its really weird though, I still don't go over 3% gpu usage even with 4 WU running. Here's my app_info file:

Code:
<app_info>
 <app>
 <name>milkyway</name>
 </app>
 <file_info>
  <name>milkyway_separation_1.02_windows_x86_64__opencl_amd_ati.exe</name>
  <executable/>
 </file_info>
 <app_version>
  <app_name>milkyway</app_name>
  <version_num>102</version_num>
    <flops>1.0e11</flops>
    <avg_ncpus>0.05</avg_ncpus>
    <max_ncpus>1</max_ncpus>
    <plan_class>ati14ati</plan_class>
    <coproc>
      <type>ATI</type>
      <count>0.25</count>
    </coproc>
    <cmdline></cmdline>
  <file_ref>
   <file_name>milkyway_separation_1.02_windows_x86_64__opencl_amd_ati.exe</file_name>
   <main_program/>
  </file_ref>
 </app_version>
</app_info>

It is coming up as anonymous platform and in the last 24 hours I have 76 validation inconclusive completed WU. Is that something to do with my driver versions or my app_info file?

ATI driver version 12.10
BOINC version 6.12.34

What other system info would you like? I am running the rig in my sig.

I also just started running BOINC on my 7970.

I am using Bal3wolf's, 12.11 Beta7 opencl, modified driver. Opencl is broken in the 12.11 beta driver, and it doesn't get completely removed with a normal driver uninstall re-install. You can download that driver here . I would recommend using Driver Fusion or Atiman to completely uninstall your current drivers.

For MilkyWay I didn't use an app_info file. I just downloaded the latest BOINC and MilkyWay, and It recognized my gpu and started crunching.

Hopefully a fresh driver install will clear up the 3% usage issue.

It might also be helpful if you can post your project and global computing preferences, so one of the more experienced users can make sure your configuration is correct.

I had problems on my Win7-64b systems. The only install that worked perfectly for me was as follows:

Uninstall the AMD drivers, all of them using stock uninstall method. You can use driver sweeper if you want, but I found it makes no difference.
Reboot.
Install Catalyst 12.4 .
Reboot.
Install Bal3Wolf moded drivers without removing 12.4.

All problems fixed... works great.
