XFX Double D 7970 3GB or GTX 680 2GB?

Thread Starter
Hey Guys,
I decided to kick the 6970's to the curb because i am always having x-fire issues and the cards being in x-fire make my small room hotter because the run quite warm, also the "Never Settle" drivers had no effect to the 6000 series (wich upset me). Anyways I was wondering which to go with and how peoples experience with the newest drivers from AMD have been.

p.s. Only really game in 1080p but would like the option to use 1440p if I wanted to upgrade monitors later. also play games like FC3, Witcher 2, BF3 and Arkham City. also my budget only allows for the 2GB model GTX 680. Also worried about how bad AMD has been doing and wondering if they will go under or be bought out....

I am personally an nvidia fan their product just always seems to work better and last longer also the 680's are newer than the 7970's and you wont need the extra gig of ram from the 7970's anyways

AMD won this time. HD7970 is the better card all around. Don't get the XFX DD version though.

Also, just because the GTX680 "is newer" does not make it better. It costs more for a slower card.

yes you will need 3gb of vram with a 1440p monitor on certain games..and next gen is coming with new consoles coming out next year so im positive it will be needed.unless you upgrade your cards ever gen.

I'm no expert, but personally I would go with the 680. From what I hear, the 7970 can be overclocked higher, but I am really a fan of Nvidia's PhysX when it's done right.

That being said, if you're planning on gaming at 1440p, for futureproofing's sake, I would REALLY suggest saving up (or selling some stuff) and getting the 4GB version. I would imagine you would run out of RAM long before you ran out of GPU horsepower. Also, when you do run out of horsepower down the road, throw another 680 in the mix and you're golden.

As it stands though, I'd say 680. If you don't care about PhysX at all, then for futureproofing, it makes more sense to get the 3GB 7970.

But really, the 8000 series and Nvidia 700 series aren't too far off. I think I'd personally wait.

Both cards will kick butt and take names for you. Get the Nvidia card if you play games that use PhysX (Metro 2033, the Batman series, Borderlands 2, etc). Get the AMD card if you don't.

With a GTX680, you run out of memory bandwidth before you run out of anything else lachen.gif

I am waiting until Fall 2013 myself, but I am planning on getting the 7970 if I can't afford the 8xxx Series cards.
