Best Playstation 3 Hard Drive Upgrade?

Thread Starter
I purchased a couple of PS3s last week. I know some ppl might be jealous of this but you guys need to learn to live in this Capitalist society we live in. Gotta love it.
I am planning to upgrade the hard drive in my own PS3 to a larger drive, and possibly a couple I am selling.

I am looking for Laptop 2.5" SATA drives. I don't know much about laptop drives and was hoping someone could give their opinion on which is the better drive to get out there right now.

The PS3 comes stock with Seagate Momentus 5400.2 drives with 8mb buffer. I have considered upgrading to a Seagate Momentus 7200.1 SATA W/NCQ but I am not so sure it would be better than a Toshiba 5400rpm drive with 16MB buffer. I care more for speed and load times than the size of the drives. Any help would be appreciated.

(ps. No, I am not going to consider a external drive or modding to 3.5" drives)

And you won't be needing a mod chip or anything to pull this off?

I know very little about the PS3, so little in fact I was not aware that you could switch out their hard drives! Either way, the 7200 which undoubtedly has a 8mb buffer atleast would perform much better then the 5400. However, I think the NCQ will be a moot point, as im not sure the PS3 would utilize that, and even if it did, how much could your PS3 need off your HDD at one time! Im really not sure changing out the HDD is such a good idea, consider larger HDD and higher RPM speeds will create more heat, and your just putting more heat into a system that has already been proven susceptible to overheating!

No the PS3 hard drives can be upgraded, it tells you how to do it in the instruction manual (Sony actually did something right) but the most space out for 2.5" HDDs are 120GB or 160GB, I can't remember

The procedure is actually quite simple. I took one out already and I must say it was easier than removing/installing a hard drive in my computer.
http://www.slashgear.com/ps3-hard-dr...ade-132464.php

Toshiba has 200GB 2.5" drives that I looked at originally, but their spindle speed is only 5400RPM. That is the max capacity I have found. I am more leaning towards the 100GB Momentus 7200.1 drive at the moment.

I am not 100% sure whether the PS3 would utilize Native Command Queing either. I assume it probably does if you can install Windows XP Pro on it. As soon as I can, I might install windows on mine temporarly and do a Sandra benchie on the whole thing. I think I have heard Sony claim this thing is 10x more powerful than anything Intel offers us for our computers today and I want proof.

About the heat issue, I haven't had any problems so far. I know it gets hot after a couple hours of playtime, and it gets hot faster than my 360, but not by much. The airflow feels like my 360 without the intercooler. Check this out. Shows how hot this thing can get, as well as some images of the heatsink and internal components.

Well does anyone have any opinions about what the best 2.5" laptop hard drive out there is?

Some I have found :

PS3 60GB Drive :http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...390&CatId=1277
I believe this is the exact 60gb drive that comes with the PS3.

120GB Seagate Momentus 5400.2:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/index.p...ctID=6558&SID=
Just a 100gb version of the same stock 60GB drive.

100GB Seagate Momentus 7200.1:

Hitachi 7K100 100GB 7200rpm:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...437&CatId=2344

I am not 100% sure which drive I should get. There is also a 200GB Toshiba drive but it isnt SATA. I am a little concerned about the power usage for 7200's. I think they barely use more power than 5400's, but would it hurt the PS3?

I wonder if PS3 has RAID support?
