[MSNBC]DNA is directly photographed for the first time - Page 4

You know, I saw this a bit ago, when the article first came out...and I was like eek.gif

...and then I saw a comment that read, and I quote "lol...DNAs not even real."

....I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

DNA how does it work? dont tell me to wiki it, someone explain it to me in layman's terms
post #33 of 82
DNA holds the building blocks to every cell and essential nutrient your body needs to survive. Inside cells DNA is copied (RNA) and with that the cell makes whatever it needs to for your survival.

Bout as basic as I can get.

You do realize how small of a structure that is, right?

That strand is seven DNA molecules wrapped together (the electron beam they used to image it would break a single strand), and is only a few dozen atoms thick.

Also, they managed to suspend this thing on two silicon pillars only nanometers wide.

There isn't much that could be done to improve the quality of the image. It's already way too small to be seen with optical instruments using visible light.

Well, they could Photoshop it biggrin.gif

The only cells which lack DNA are the mature red blood cells (erythrocytes). This is because they lack a nucleus, which is where the DNA is found in other cells. Red blood cells also lack mitochondria which themselves have DNA.
