Samsung Galaxy S3 outsells iPhone 5 to remain UK's most popular smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy S3 outsold the iPhone 5 in the UK in November. Pretty impressive seeing as how the Apple iPhone used to dominate sales in the UK.

Even sales of the iPhone 4S beat the iPhone 5.

Samsung Galaxy S3 outsells iPhone 5 to remain UK's most popular smartphone
By Luke Johnson 03 December 2012

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has once again outsold the iPhone 5, retaining its crown as the UK’s most popular smartphone for a seventh consecutive month, new figures have revealed.

Lining up to be the UK’s Christmas number one, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has topped a sales chart largely dominated by Android devices whilst, thanks to improved contract offers on the aging model, the Apple iPhone 5 has been outperformed and overtaken by its predecessor, the iPhone 4S.

The latest figures, which are based on live searches, pre-orders and pay monthly sales that have been compiled by uSwitch, have found that the dated Samsung Galaxy S2 remains the UK’s fourth most popular handset behind the two iPhones and its S3 sibling. Having sold out of UK launch stock within 30 minutes earlier this month, high demand has helped see the LG manufactured Google Nexus 4 enter the smartphone sales charts in fifth position.

With a familiar Android themed filling to the rest of the top ten, the Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 fill positions six, seven and ten respectively, whilst the Sony Xperia U and HTC One X control spots eight and nine.

“The affordable price point has kept the Samsung Galaxy S3 at the top of the tree, but whether it will be at the top of the Christmas tree remains to be seen, as price drops for both the 4S and 5 have seen the iPhone quickly gaining ground,” Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at uSwitch said.

“And while the popularity of the XPERIA range might seem on the wane, the combination of the XPERIA T’s Bond-related campaign and affordable XPERIA U have seen them have greater longevity over HTC’s frequent, yet brief, appearances in the chart with One Series devices.

“As for the Christmas number one, the Apple brand could well reign supreme and see the iPhone 4S take over in the final straight as the gift of choice for consumers, especially at these reduced price points. Eight months may well be just that month too long for the S3 to wear the mobile crown.”

Ironically, the iPhone 5 is the best performing device they have ever created.

Benchmarks generally put it away above the capability of the S3. Yet sells less. LoL

Still supping the Steve Jobs drivel about 3.5" screens being the sweet spot I suppose.

Correct me I'm wrong but the galaxy s3 came out in MAY 2012... iPhone 5 in late September. I would hope a phone coming out later that is supposed to be a flagship device would be better benchmark wise.

I would expect the best device for apple to be whatever there newest device is... considering they don't make multiple versions of smartphones, just a iphone with different memory capacities.

The SGS3 still beats the iPhone 5 in some benchmarks. And the SGS3 offers way more features like microSD, NFC and burst camera mode.

You can do burst camera mode on the iPhone 5. Just isn't built in as a feature. All about the apps.

Hardware wise the S3 is a superb device but once you get a taste of iOS apps and how much better and more polished they are than the android equivalents, all of it becomes a null point. :-(

Sir, your logic has no place in these threads. These threads are specifically intended to warp reality with a bias spin on pro-Android agenda.

Take your logic elsewhere.

Hows it have no logic? Hardware gets better every day. It would be common sense a flagship phone coming out months after a another flagship phone was released should perform better.

I don't see any pro-Android agenda in that article. It indicates that the iPhone 5 is coming second. How is that pro-Android agenda?

The article is telling the truth whether you like it or not.

A lot of people got tired of waiting for the Iphone 5 availability when it got released and opted to get the SG3. Added to it was the poor craftsmanship of the black version since the majority of people wants the latter.

I just find the iPhone 5's elongated design to be ugly.
