PWM High Pitch Screeching Noise

Thread Starter
Just bought two COUGAR CF-V12HP Vortex 120mm fan and its producing this High pitch screeching noise that is giving me a headache.

I've heard of PWM fans causing audible noise at low speeds, but this cougar vortex fan is really loud & ear piercing. Anyone know of a fix or mod to make it better? Should I get a fan controller that can do voltage control with a PWM fan?

Lol I had to applaud.gif
I would maybe try a RMA? Get a new one to make sure it's not a fluke and then go for a fan controller to tone the speeds to your liking wink.gif

I had this fan once, It behave good and quite silence on full speed.
on low speed, yes it's clicking a bit.

Do you hook your fan to a fan controller?

Well I got two cougar fan at the same time, but both exhibit this high pitch screech.

I have the fans plugged into the 4pin fan header of my motherboard (GA-Z77x-ud3h) with speedfan software I can manually control the speed.
At full speed the screech is gone, but the fan is pretty loud. At lower speed 800-1400rpm range the screeching noise starts.

that's odd.

my previous cougar fan spin from 800-1300rpm only,
the fan was plugged directly to the 4pin cpu fan header and controlled via the bios

Yeah, that would drive me nuts. kookoo.gif

Have you tried troubleshooting by experimenting with different set ups? First, find out and record what RPM and, or, PWM % the fans are running out when you notice the sound. Then do some different test and see if the sound persist. Try removing speedfan and using the motherboards PWM control instead.

Also, you say the fans are connected to a "4 pin header", so I assume both fans are connected to the same header. When using dual PWM fans on one PWM header you want to make sure the Y cable isn't sending both fans RPM data to the computer. This can lead to problems because the computer is receiving two sets of RPM, but the computer thinks it's just one fan.

So check your set up, and report back. biggrin.gif

Yes, it is driving me nuts.

The Cougar vortex will start making high pitch whining noise at 800-1400rpm range. At max 1500rpm speed the whine noise is gone, but the air turbulence is loud. The noise remain using either motherboard control or speedfan. Tried different fan header too same noise. I'm not using y-splitters. My mobo had multiple headers to use.

If you want to know what this sounds like watch this youtube video of a guy demonstrating it. Except mine is louder since I got two of them whining.

Gave up on the Cougar vortex fans. I got some Noctua NF-F12 PWM fans and zero whining noise.

Intresting thread- guess I am not the only one...I was about to post about this same scenario and came across this thread...
I have the back version of this fan- same thing using BIOS to control it I get some sort of pitched noise- full speed its gone but kinda loud for basic tasks...Really want to take advantage of PWM feature- anyone suggest some 120mm PWM fans that are good for a radiator use (push/pull) on a corsair H80?

This is the fan that I have- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835553006

Will be requesting to send them back to newegg.....I just looked closer at the reviews from newegg and looks like lot of the people complain about this issue thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif
