I wonder if pressure had built up in his system first because it literally was a cartographic failure, vs a small leak. I believe he had a corresponding with XSPC telling them what ingredients were in the antifreeze and none of them were supposedly unsafe for reservoir. It's possible it was a bad batch of reservoirs. I had bought one around the same time and I got rid of it just in case. This was about 2 years ago.

If it was truly a catastrophic failure, I can think of only a few causes:
1: pump dies - causing CPU to boil water, causing pressure, causing BOOM.
2: pump dies - turning into a heater, boiling water, causing pressure, causing BOOM.
3: chemical reaction that produces gas, causing pressure, causing BOOM.

I only know of a few common glycols:
Ethylene glycol, aka 1,2-ethanediol
Propylene glycol, aka 1,2-propanediol (food safe)
brake fluid glycol, aka 1,3-butanediol (also used for making plastics - likes to dissolve paint)

There are others, but those are not readily accessible (at least not by accident).
