Recommend me a 7970!

Thread Starter
I've been looking to replace my HD5870 for a while now because ever since I got my 1440p monitor I just can't enjoy games like I used to at 1080p, plus I'll be getting a second u2711 soon and this card has been through too much for me to put it through that so It's upgrade time!

I can afford a 7970 so why not go for it eh? I just wanted to know the best card for around the £350 mark, I want the best overclocking ability without the fancy coolers as this will be going under water ASAP which brings me to my next point, the card should preferably be reference PCB to make it easier to grab a block for.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks thumb.gifthumb.gif

Yesterday I was in the same boat as you and with help from some members here I went ahead and purchased the MSI Lightning 7970 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127670).

Keep in mind that it doesn't have a dual link DVI port so unless your monitor has a displayport connection, you're gonna need an active displayport to dual link dvi adapter (such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0FU0BA4839&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleMKP&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleMKP-_-pla-_-NA-_-NA) to get 1440p on your monitor.

Can't wait for mine, should be here today!

I did look at the MSI lightening cards but they look a bit pricey from what I have seen unfortunately.

His monitor has DP so it's all good, but i think the normal lightning has been replaced by the BE version in the UK. Which is quite a bit above his budget @ £430....

I did a conversion of pounds to american dollars and 350 pounds is roughly $564 dollars. Newegg has that card on sale for 464 bucks after the 5% promo code. So maybe you can get a similar deal in London?

Ah I see.

And unfortunately as I've seen before many times on this website, stuff in the US seems to be quite a bit cheaper than here in the UK. The lightening is around 400£ which is (according to Google) around 644$ so yeah.

I'm also looking for a 7970 to replace my 5870 and the Gigabyte GV-R797OC-3GD looks like a great deal to me. They seem to OC well, have a 1000mhz clock, and have quality parts at a good price. Only thing i don't like is the blue PCB but I'm going to throw a waterblock and back plate on it so you wont see it. Think I'm going with the Swifttech Komodo block. Have any idea on what block your going with?

I hope this doesn't fall on deaf ears - get a 7950.

Get a 7950 now (£200) and save the remaining £150, until you have enough for another 7950, and blow away the performance of a 7970.

Any of the high end Sapphire cards, the MSI 7970 Lightning or if you don't mind triple slot cards the Asus 7970 Matrix Platinum thumb.gif
