When RAM detects as half-size?

When testing RAM I sometimes run into a situation where only 1/2 the size of the RAM is recognized by both the BIOS and memtest86+. Just testing a couple of Kingston KVR533D2K@/1GB sticks (which come in a set of 2, and I have 2 identical sticks). I'm thinking it could have something to do with the double-sided nature of the RAM (RAM chips on both sides). If I remember correctly I haven't had half-memory size problems with single sided RAM.

Anyone have any insights into this?

So you're saying that when you test 2 1GB sticks, your Bios only recognizes them as 2 512MB sticks?
Or is it not seeing one of the sticks at all? We need more details please.

You aren't running them on a x58 mobo by any chance? I know the 1366 can some times randomly lose some ram if the ram voltage aren't hihg enough for the overclock.

This is exactly the case. Testing on an Intel D945GPM motherboard. Both sticks appear as 512MB.
