best way extend Wifi without repeater

I have some spots in the house with no reception and would like to extend or create wifi there.

is there anyone way doing that without using a repeater/extender? i hear those cut the bandwidth in half.

If that is the case, I'm thinking of using powerline and attaching routers at the end of each spot. this is the only solution I can think of with my limited knowledge (pricey too)

trying to bring signals to room so can stream movies, gaming, and internet browse

As far as bandwidth is concerned, the extender will perform similarly to a powerline adapter. It just behaves like another device on the network. The bandwidth won't go away unless it's being consumed by a device.

I prefer powerline but if cost is the utmost concern then I'd weigh your options. I believe we spent about $30 on our powerline adapters for my brother's room.

Edit:
Do you really need routers on both ends of the powerline ethernet? That just seems like a nightmare and could avoided just by using a range extender assuming the multiple devices in the non-coverage area have wireless adapters.

If you were only hooking up one device in the non-coverage areas I'd suggest a cheap powerline adapter with only one port and forget about the routers. Otherwise you can try to find powerline adapters with a switch/multiple ports built in.

Powerline works pretty well (I use it for my xbox), not sure what router you have but you might be able to get better antennas for it.

a repeater/bridge setup only halves your bandwidth with WDS setups etc IIRC
but, if you dont mind the repeater having its own seperate wireless network, it will only slow you down if you are one of the clients on the repeater, and you will just be slowed to the speed of the connection to the other router.

i was using repeater bridges for my network just a few days ago, they work well.
i now have some cables ran around, so my APs are all wired, so i can run all one SSID, one network

so bandwidth is on halved when devices are connected to the repeaters own network, not devices connected to the "1st" router?

i just want to have hardwired for streaming, and wifi for phones, tablets, etc in that area -fullspeed if possible

with a "repeater bridge" setup,, the first base AP/router remains untouched, it still broadcasts a normal wifi network
but, the repeater bridge, connects to that network as any other client, it then takes that wireless connection that it has, and redistributes it
so if you connect to the base AP, you will get whatever speeds that offers you based on range etc
if you connect to the repeater bridge, your maximum speed you will be able to achieve to the internet will be dependent on how fast the connection between the repeater bridge and the main AP is.
in my setup, i could still transfer files to my brdged rig (rig was wired to the repeater bridge) at around 1.1 mbytes/s on my ancient wireless G network (all wireless G hardware, all dd-wrt) with a bit of distance (signal was 50-54% between AP and bridge)

Im using a repeater/extender in my house and with 4 walls of double sided plaster I have only lost 8mb down and 2mb up off a 30mb down 25mb fiber optic version line.

As for using the powerline network can have issues too. Depending on how your electrical system is setup in the house. you might not get any network on other rooms.

As others have said power line adapters work good.

If you are a bit of a MacGyver you can make a small parabolic dish or wave guide for a WiFi dongle. The wave guide is around the size of a Pringles can for 2.4 Ghz.
Either should be good for a couple bars reception. The difference is these devices are directional.

In fact the two work so well you can use them together. For example the waveguide combined with a small satellite dish is enough for me to connect to a router 8 KM away.
The other dish I made uses a Bi-Quad antenna combined with a router running DD-WRT. The advantage of this setup is that it works wirelessly and is a repeater, although it does not ttravel nearly as far as the smaller dish with the WiFi dongle.

Not trying to go off-topic, just showing how well it works. These projects all started when I was in a similar situation as you. My first dish was made from a WiFi dongle and a beer can. smile.gif

So in your home all you really need is a small to medium sized Wok or other parabolic shaped frying pan.

Yes the second one is good for maybe a mile or so. I don't know if I can adjust it to go further, or if it's at the limitations of the particular setup.

The first one really impresses me for distance, while the second is more practical because it does not require a short USB connection and works with multiple computers. I can stick it in the woods with a car battery and mini solar panel, for a truly wireless setup. Even has a fan for the summer time. thumb.gif Nerd alert.
