Input lag is usually a much more important factor than response time. While response time does have an impact on the overall time from the image being processed to the image appearing on the monitor, usually the input lag is the bigger factor. As such, monitors with a 5ms response time are usually just fine. The bigger issue is when the input lag is in the 20ms+ range. For figuring out which monitor is right for you, I recommend checking out the reviews at Prad.de and TFTCentral. Both of them do fantastic reviews and use a CRT monitor to test the actual input lag of LCD monitors.

from what I've read there's no such thing as a 2ms/5ms monitor (everyone that says so is lying) pixels aren't that fast. with that said a "2ms" rated lcd monitor almost has no difference with a "5ms" rated monitor. I actually have two screens on my sig rig and my main one is 2ms while the other is 5ms. I notice zero difference and I've gamed with them both for a few years

Reported response times are meaningless (real world tests will never show a 2ms response time in any real world scenario).

I'm almost positive that 2ms panels are the same as 5ms panels, just with the sub pixels overvolted during color changes (aka "overdrive").

That said, if the price is very close and you play FPS games, I'd go with the 2ms panel. Overdrive does make a difference, but it's not like it's actually a faster panel like they would like to advertise. It's also something you won't notice if the screens are side by side.

Manufacturer stated response times are notoriously imprecise. You can have two displays rated the same that are very different in practice.

Anyway, most people won't notice any significant ghosting on a 2ms GTG panel (unless it's got artifact problems from response time compensation), but as you go higher than this more and more people will be able to perceive ghosting.

Personally, I have several brands of monitors from 2 to 8ms response time, and I can notice some level of ghosting on all of them, except for the 2ms ASUS. My 3ms Hanns-G doens't have much ghosting, but it does have some RTC artifacting (rarer on newer panels).

8ms GTG usually means something in the ballpark of 15-20ms black-white-black response time, and even 8ms (1/125th of a second) is perceptible to many people in high contrast situations.

just to throw it in. I have a cheap 40" crap branded lcd monitor on my htpc rig on my sig rated with 8ms response time and there's hardly any input lag.

Ghosting is really noticeable when you play fast paced games ala FPS - especially if you ever played them heavily on CRT's.

I notice it on my IPS all the time. However, I wouldn't get it up for the color quality on my IPS - far better than my older LCD's.

Now if only I had enough space on my desk for a 24" widescreen CRT ala FW900.......... tongue.gif

Response time is the time it takes for the monitor to change pixels colours from one to another.
