Coil whine from every card I get :\

Thread Starter
I guess I either have really bad luck or whatever the reason may be, but every card I seem to get always had coil whine. Now I hear coil whine from a GPU is "normal" and to not worry about it (turn my volume up to sound it out), but I want to just make sure before I decide to RMA it for the third time. It's my GTX 670 DCU II TOP that's making the noise. My 7950 Windforce III was also making a lot of coil whine as well.

Is this something I need to really worry about?

Corsair HX 750. Brand new. had to send in my OCZ for RMA since that PSU was making horrrrible coil whine. That part went away, but now it's the cards.

Can still be your power supply's fault.
you could open up the card and coat the coils with nail polish, it would silence them
Coil whine is harmless though.
How new is the card? A lot of times the whine will go away after the card "breaks in" a little bit.

Coil Whine isn't a bad thing as you stated, the reason for coil whine is the high amperage of the cards causing a flicker on the voltage regulators on the card, if you want to get rid of it you need to INCREASE voltage and clocks, the faster the regulators work the less whine or obviously down clock the card and volts so its less noisy.

This can only be done on older cards as they have changed.

Thanks for all the replies guys! The card is brand spanking new. I had to RMA my old one and they couldn't fix it so they sent me a new one. I'll definitely check this out at a later date to see if the whine goes away after some usage. I haven't overclocked it yet so maybe that'll do it as well since you said that increased voltage and clock speeds will make them work faster.
