WiFi noise reduction?

Thread Starter
I moved from the middle of nowhere to an apartment complex in the capital. While moving my setup I found I was having trouble connecting to my router that was only ~25 feet away. I thought it was just because the signal had to travel through the kitchen and bathroom and so appliances/metal was interfering. Now I think it is just the fact of too many networks on the 2.4GHZ range.

I have DD-WRT on a cisco N router and the channel set to 'auto'

By the look of the graph however don't think there is really anything I can set it to that would make a difference. So now I'm wondering about little life-hacks that I could do such as strategic use of aluminium foil to help minimize he noise issue.

Any ideas?

Aluminum foil?
You could perhaps go into setting up a repeater or going to the 5GHZ range?

Best way to avoid is getting the 5GHz router which opens you up to 23 open channels. But you would need to get a 5GHz adapter for your laptop/PC if it doesn't have one already.

OR

View all the channels the APs are running on of channels 1,6,11 choose the one that occurs the least and set your AP to that channel. Don't select any channels between the the numbers I mentioned as those are bleed over areas and can degrade your signal quality even worse.

You can always try a unidirectional dish, but this hinders your mobility around the space.

Unfortunately in a very populated area, there is little you can do.

There is resistant paint out there. You could paint it on the perimeter walls of your apartment and that might help.

I don't have a 5GHZ router and changing it would probably anger my very non-tech roommates (also the only reason why I'm not running just a Ethernet cable). It is only for my desktop so mobility really isn't an issue hence why I was thinking of trying to jerry-rig a unidirectional dish/receiver type thing.
