good IPS moitor for gaming

Thread Starter
hi,

i am looking to upgrade my old 1680x1050 LCD screen to a higher resolution prefably IPS screen. Mainly used for gaming. i have been looking at the dell Dell U2713HM-IPS-LED but the 8-ms response time seems a bit slow for FPS gaming. are there any better options out there for me under $1000?

Are you looking for a 2560x1600 for 1440? What games are you going to be playing? IPS monitors do look great, but if you're into FPS 120hz is also amazing.

Manufacture response times don't mean anything, the Dell is great for all but enthusiast gamers, but it does have the most quality control related issues out of all the 2560x1440 matte IPS/PLS displays. Read these reviews:

Option 4: The viewsonic VP2770 has the best colours out of the matte 2560x1440p displays under 1000$. TFT Centrals input lag value is wrong, it has the same amount of input lag as the others (1 frame or around 17ms)

1600 would be great but arent they a bit more expensive. I am looking to play FPS games but im more bothered by bad image quality than input lag and blur. this is why im looking for a higher resolution IPS, otherwise i would just go and get a 120H 2ms response TN pannel.

what is it about the Dell that makes people always say its bad for gaming. As far as i can tell its response times are just as bad as some other IPS/PLS displays. I would appreciate some clarification on why the Dell isnt the best for gaming.

The single input Catleap seems to destroy the Dell and most 1440p IPS displays as far as input lag goes. The only other acceptable display seems to be the HP ZR2740 and maybe the Samsung S27A850D.

That dell doesn't seem to be too bad but the U2711 seems to be horrendous with input lag.

The multi-input 2560x1440 IPS/PLS have around 1 frame (17ms) of input lag, which makes them not suitable for enthusiast gamers who want the most CRT-like experience. Enthusiast gamers will opt for a 120-144hz TN or the 120hz Catleap.

If you did not buy your current display with input lag in mind you have nothing to worry about.

Have you tested the VP2770? What is the pixel response time like next to the PB278Q?

The single input Korean displays like the catleap don't appear to have any noticeable input lag. Even at 60hz they aren't bad.

120hz displays are nice for two things imo. One is 3d, when it works well it is really cool. The higher refresh rate is great for fast paced FPS games but in the other 90% of games I prefer a nice 1440p display.

My current display is only 60Hz 5ms response time (viewsonic vx2235wm-7.) My PC is only capable of producing frame rates around 30-40 FPS at higher resolutions so wouldnt 120Hz be a waste of time if i cant get FPS of 120?

I completely agree, i dont play really fast paced games like COD and i much preffer to have a nice high resolution on slower games.

No but it should be the same since it is basically just a re branded Samsung S27A850D with better factory calibrated colours.

If your PC is only able to output 30-40fps @1680x1050 there is no point in getting a 2560x1440 or 120hz display. Upgrade first.
