Indeed - but in many games the effect of medium vs low vs high is not that large. Let me provide some screenshots I took a little while ago when in some thread there was discussion about high resolution gaming.
This is Metro 2033 - one of the screenshots is DX 9 mode, low settings and others should be DX 11 mode medium and then highest possible settings. BTW in DX 9 low settings a single 6770 is capable of running Metro 2033 at approx 30 fps at that resolution. The resolution is 5400x1920. In DX 11 mode ofc 6770 is no where near cutting it as it runs out of RAM at such resolution and the DX 11 shots are taken on 7870 card (at highest settings the game is not really playable with a 7870 tho as FPS is ~15 at such resolution). In some other places ofc the effects of the quality settings stand out more but I dont have good selection of screenshots for these and also games which are not mostly dark tunnels tend to allow better to spot the difference in settings but even then it takes a damn good eye usually to catch the difference between say, medium and high setting.
