Annoying hum when I use my Headset

Thread Starter
Hello there,

So I have tried a lot of things too find out where this issue comes from. When I plug my headset microphone jack and go onto Skype and talk to others they say to my that I have a annoying hum coming from the background.

When I go into my ASUS Xonar and go to the Recording tab and click: Monitor (this means I can hear my self) I can hear it loud and clear.
I tried 3 headsets and every single headset does the exact same thing, I even bought a completely new one (TT eSPORTS Shock) without success.

This is a video that I made with the sound. At the start of the video I will touch the case and the hum lowers.
So I RMA my motherboard which eventually returned with no issues. I bought a completely new case: CM Storm Enforcer without success. Tried different outlets including the one on which my brother his PC is connected and I still get it while his PC doesn't. The headset also Doesn't hum when I use it on his PC.

I ran my PC on 1 RAM stick, with 1 HD6870 and without. It happens on-board and with the ASUS Xonar DG (Which I bought hopping it would solve my issue).

So for those wondering, yes I have tried almost every single option with grounding and nothing worked.

Can it also lie in the HDD maybe? I do know my Main 1TB HDD doesn't perform well as it goes from 13mb min to 130max in reading with big dips on the graph in HDD Tune.

So my specs are as followed.

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ OC 4.5GHZ

I have this same issue, and apparently it is pretty common. I have started a thread that has pretty much detailed what I have done to try to eliminate the noise. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to completely eliminate this noise without going fully digital via USB, which would negate the purpose of having a discrete sound card in the first place.

Anywho, here is thread I have started about this topic:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1333706/buzzing-noise-when-using-headset-microphone-through-voip-while-gaming-xonar-dx-and-x-fi-fatality

Moving your Sound card as far away as you can from your GPU may minimize the noise a little bit. Your noise is a bit different from mine, but it may be related. Your noise is a low frequency hum, my is a more mid frequency buzz. Try running through the same steps I did, and see if the issue is resolved.

Disable all the highlighted settings.

Disabling these will eliminate the noise for the user, but the recipient at the other end of the VOIP will still hear it. I needed Microphone boost in order to be heard on Vent, so chances are the OP may need it as well.

Its worth a try for him to check those settings.
Your problem "might" not be the same as his.

Also do you guys have your PC grounded ?
If not that could be the cause of the problem to.

I have no protected earth here either and before i got this AX750 PSU i Always had a little "hum" in my sound to.

I have found that audio plugs both front and back to be affected by USB devices, often when you have dry humidity causing electrostatic discharges in dry climates (carpets, rubber, etc). I lost good functionality of my left-front-panel USB jack because of this.

I prefer to use my front panel jack for my headphones as I have my Xonar DG populated with 5.1 audio out in the back, and because of the USB jack being funky I have to switch my audio from FP Headphones to 5.1 Channel when I want to use that particular USB port. If I don't change it, I have terrible problems with audio (that I can hear with/without self monitoring).

Just a thought - you might check USB devices that may/may not be causing a similar problem. redface.gif

This may sound stupid but what kind of lighting are you near? I've had strange things happen with fluorescent lighting nearby that don't happen when I'm using alternative lights (or the lights are off). Could also be something to do with your power affecting the PSU causing a hum too. Have you tried putting a ground lift on your PSU plug?
Thread Starter
No. But I did ran my PC without case and my old PSU which also results in the same hum. I did it on wood so it would't ground or how that works. Easier: friend told that I had to do stuff like that on wood.
