Baking 5970 Results :-)

Thread Starter

So I recently made this risky purchase on ebay for two broken 5970s. The one I tried baking is pictured (Diamond card possibly?) gave horrible artifacting, to the point of continuous "Display Driver Stopped Responding" errors whenever I launched Firefox or other apps. 3D was out of the question.

I put it in the ol' oven at the recommended 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Didn't bother to make sure the temperature was accurate by measuring, mostly because I'm lazy tongue.gif and don't have the right equipment. After waiting for a good 20 minutes, I reassembled the card and put it back in the sig rig, which by the way doesn't have enough room to mount unless you take out the bottom fan. I fired it up and experienced none of the issues I had before. Played Counterstrike, ran some benches (may post some pictures later... I need to take off the heatsink to apply some new thermal grease) and it works!

I am not sure this warranted a new thread, but I was so excited that the card worked smile.gif. If anyone has artifacting cards, don't listen to the people that say the caps will explode or all the chips will fall off. BTW, all the pictures I saw of people baking show the cards facing upside-down. I baked mine right-side-up because I was afraid the GPU core would fall off or something.

I didn't take any pictures before baking because I didn't think it would work, but here it is with the lid off:

So my question at this point is, can I use normal heatsink paste everywhere on the card, or do I need to get some kind of special thermal pads?

Congrats, I still use my 5970! You can reuse your original thermal pads, if they are still in good shape, or buy new ones and use the thermal paste of choice on your gpus.

Congratulations mate, It's good to hear of another baking success.
Thats awesome. I might do this! Did you bake both cards and did the other one work?

and standard paste would be fine, whatever you use on everything else. ANd the coolers have the pads for the memory so you will be fine!

Thats amazing. I did try to bake my HD 4850 but failed because the memory was the cause of artifacts.

I did try to bake the other card... but it wasn't exhibiting the same symptoms that the one I just mentioned does. It does not artifact, and will for some reason will not display in the old character mode, whatever its called, aka I can't see the bios or the boot up screen. And it dies after a couple of minutes in Windows. Baking did not help that. I am starting to think it could be a BIOS issue. I will see if I can flash it at some point.
