14 Year old in need of help!

Thread Starter
Hello, I'm 14 and I'm hoping to combine my birthday and my Christmas present for a gaming computer. I get B's and C's in school mainly and also sometimes A's when a big test rolls around. I want to be able to buy it shortly after Christmas this year and then be able to pay off about $800 over the next year or two. I live with my mom and step dad with 2 other siblings in a medium/large sized house. I would consider my family middle class and we usually can afford a lot of stuff. At this time of the year a lot of dental stuff has been going on with my step brother and sister. My sister got surgery today and my step brother got braces a week ago, his mom is paying most of the funds but there is also the surgery funds for my sister. I got an ATV a couple of years ago but I hardly get the chance to ride it (I only ride it about 2/3 times a year on sand dunes). My step brother and step dad seem a lot more interested in riding theirs and I like to ride mine but the time hardly ever comes. My dad thinks that we should sell it since I barely get the chance to ride but my step dad and mom would disagree. I can say that I agree with my dad because if we sold that then I'd be able to get 2 gaming PC's at the price it's worth, but I would only get one. I have confronted my parents about the PC but not the selling of my ATV.
My plan would to be for my mom/step dad to buy the gaming PC and then my dad to buy me the monitor. I want to build the PC myself since I have a wide knowledge about that stuff above my parents and siblings. The computer with the desk costs about $1200 and then the rest is about $300 (my dad would pay for the $300). I also plan to make a future in using computers to do stuff. I like the idea of game commentating but I'd most likely end up working with VALVe since I live about 10 miles from one of their buildings. I also want to make maps for Source games and the just recently launched Far Cry 3. Since my dad does not even know much about it I'm mainly asking him for an Astro A40 for Christmas since he has won some money gambling.
I have not really mentioned it too much to my parents since I'm guessing they will surprise me with a Hewlet-Packard or something like that. I don't imagine them doing that though because they know that I want to build it and I've also explained that building is far superior to buying pre-built. I'd also sell some of my old childhood toys since I still have quite a few and there are some poorer families who can't afford some of the newer toys. My family also has a garage sale every year.
One thing I've kept in my mine is this "If it's worth having then it's worth working for" Which makes sense because you have to work to get anything in life and I'm ready to do so. I do think that my parents will surprise me by having my log on to our computer and then show them the list of stuff since I've come to know my parents are like to surprise us (Exactly how I got my ATV).
When I got my ATV my step dad asked me to help him in the shed and then he opens it and pulls out a brand spanking new Yamaha Raptor 250. It would also be nice to know about what some good jobs would be for a kid my age.

Be more concise. Add spacing. Split it into paragraphs. I can't read a wall of text.

Good jobs at the age of 14 include:
KFC
Maccas
Supermarkets.
I work at KFC around 30-35 hours a week i'm 17 and attend school i was able to build my PC myself which is around 5-6k all up.
You want to edit maps in games like CS?
I suggest doing with a AMD Quad core system with a 7770 or above GPU and maybe 4-6Gb's of Ram.
A 7200rpm HDD
A Good 500w PSU.
You will also want a good motherboard, Typically Asus or Gigabyte on the AMD side.
I say AMD because at 14 you would not have a good income if any and AMD systems are cheap especially APU which should do fine with tasks listed.

Hmm, I think I will need a little more information to answer your question. In all seriousness, at your age just get a job that is fun for you. For example, I do not know if you can do this at 14 but when I was 16 I became a lifeguard and that was fun.

Well if you need the money, sell the ATV, and ask your parents nicely about using that money to purchase parts for a computer smile.gif

Wait, are you building a computer from scratch, or just customizing a build from a major brand like Dell or HP? FYI you don't need to spend a ton of money to have a more than adequate rig. For $700 nowadays you can build a very good general purpose gaming rig (especially if you live near a Microcenter.. the processor+motherboard deals there are hard to beat).

What games do you play? Some are more processor dependent (SC2, Diablo 3, Planetside 2, Source games), while others are more graphics dependent (BF3, COD, etc.)

Glad you have the ambition kid, but you'll learn the difference between a hobby vs a career once you get into college/tech school. Several years from now, your priorities may change (just a heads up, but by no means am I trying to discourage you)
