Crazy Enthusiasts Minds Wanted!!!!!

I want an insane build. Here is the criteria Old parts maybe even a single core processor but the kicker is i want to see if anyone can build one that will run skyrim and BF3 not looking for maxed out settings medium maybe high at most although thats unlikely. And price/parts log
This is something i might be interested in just for kicks my rig runs fine but old parts are typically easy to come by as well as cheap so i thought maybe id see what i could do maybe even make it a project for my little brother and I

Single Core CPU?

Do you plan on playing BF3 at 640x480?

It would go well with an ati rage 128 pro.
1. PUNCTUATION plz thx.
2. How old? like 2-3 years old, or 4-5 years old? for 2-3 years, you could get by with a LGA 775 dual core and a high end GTX 2XX series card, which should run it at medium. My sig rig runs BF3 at medium on most 64player maps. Look for Core2Duo's and Quads if you want a good CPU, and maybe a Gigabyte or Asus P45 board. For GPU I would go with a GTX 275 or maybe a 260 at the least. If you can, a GTX 295 or even a Geforce 9800GX2 would suit a Core 2 Quad very well.

Haha I love the first reply. I'm sorry, however, I am rather new to the PC area and I was curious if it was possible. I was simply looking for a very basic and cheap system that could be fun to build.

TA4K, I apologize. I do however like your suggestions. I just wanted to see what some people thought maybe some old parts and cpus that could be overclocked to run well. I just wanted this to be a cheap fun project for my brother and I.

Older parts are actually more expensive, so I can't see 775 or AM3 being a "value" proposition, unless you get it used for a VERY good price.
Pentium G530 ($50)
9800GT ($60) / HD 7750 ($100)
Cheap-o H67 motherboard
Antec One ($45)

All are good parts if you're looking for a low-end system. The G530 is on one of Intel's best architectures, and the 9800GT is hands-down the best bang for your buck graphics card today. I bet you could play BF3 on medium at 1366x768.

Honestly, older parts just use more power, are out of production (more expensive), and run hotter. The only exception to this rule is I see old high-end Core 2 Quads and Duos going for $50 on Amazon. Those were also the good old days when Intel could OC. Another alternative to the G530 would be a Phenom II X4 965 ($85 on Amazon). and 970 boards are dirt cheap, but come packed with features. Almost all 965's can get to 4.2GHz with some voltage and a 212 cooler.

It's up to you. If I could find a cheap used 45nm C2Q on Amazon, I'd take it with a Hyper 212 EVO, and OC the snot out of it. The 775 motherboard would be harder to find though. But if you just bought new, cheap, good-performing parts (like the G530), there would be no fun. OCing is half the thrill of buying a new processor, be it graphics or central. With Intel's multiplier AND base clock locks, it's out of the question on Sandy or Ivy.

If you want to most building fun (but not exactly the best performance and for sure not the best efficiency) Get any cheap AMD Phenom or FX or an Intel C2Q if you can find a cheap 775 motherboard. DDR2 isn't cheap either. 9800GT or 7750 is a good match as well.

If you want the most efficiency and cost effectiveness and gaming fun, go for a Sandy Bridge Celeron or Pentium with something like an HD 7750. Amazing energy efficiency, low noise, low heat, but no fun since CPU is locked down tight and GPU is as much fun as sliding the core slider to 900 and taking small steps from there.

The real fun begins when your budget goes into the $800+ range. I find myself hunched over my BIOS trying to tune voltages for that extra 1MHz on the base clock of my 2500K, battling the OC nightmare of GPU boost courtesy of Nvidia, and fine tuning my fans to the exact point where the noise stops but performance is OK. This is the fun part. Wrestling massive tower CPU coolers around on slippery thermal grease, Prime testing for 24+ hours, Furmark burn-in testing to check for artifacts to I can get the extra 1MHz out of my graphics memory. THAT'S THE FUN!

But at a low budget with newer parts, you can't have too much tweaking fun. If you aren't talking about OCing fun, and you just want to have fun in games, disregard my ramble above. G530, 9800GT/7750, and cheap H61/H67/B75 board will get you a nice experience at 720p with medium-high quality in the most demanding games today. If you aren't talking about the fun of gaming, and you want to have fun building, then ROCK ON! Just keep a fire extinguisher on hand if you push 1.5Vcore. Oh yeah, and get a good PSU. Corsair Builder series is excellent for the price. I'm sorry if you REALLY want old parts, but it's just not the smartest choice.

If you want something cheap to play with and to use as tool to learn, then get a used PC on Craigslist. They have many old, used and custom build PC's, that are being sold dirt cheap.

I had an e6420 and an 8800GT (aka 9800GT) run skyrim at all max except for shadows at 1280x1024 with some tex mods, at a respectable 40+ fps. Take from that what you will.

Save yourself the hassle of dealing with old parts, and build an AMD APU system! smile.gif
You can save a bunch of money by avoiding a discrete GPU right now, and then add one later when you have the cash.

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157277 ($49)
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106002 ($80) (You can get cheaper ones, but this one is overclockable and a quad core, which would be nice for those games.)
Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148559 ($17)
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151074 ($60)
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148767 ($65)

Total for components (no case): $271

This is for a DX11 system that will grow pretty well, at least for a while.
