Possible SLI thing? Second monitor just plugged in will not show anything

I have 3 470s in SLI with 290.36 drivers. I haven't tried disabling that since I'm pretty sure it would be a fix but not what I'm looking for.

Anyway, I plugged in my two monitors to the "main" card and saw both were identified in the Windows 7 Screen Resolution window. However, the second monitor wouldn't get out of standby even when enabled.

I plugged the second monitor into another card, and much the same way it was recognized. I extended the display area, and this monitor turned on but showed nothing. Just blank.

Here is what Windows shows:

In the nVidia control panel, I tried to adjust resolutions but got a blank screen that couldn't find any monitors.

What do you think could solve this? I searched other forums, but people had been having issues with this since some 190.X drivers. What I get from this is I'm 100 full units of driver releases past the exact same issue some time ago. This might mean there were 1000 different driver updates since other guys who didn't fix the issue by updating their video drivers. Thoughts and such? Thanks!

Post a screen shots when the second monitor being selected, as you have shown in first pic for first monitor.

Have you and why havent you tried latest drivers? I know you read forums, but why havent YOU tried latest drivers?

This shows the wallpaper on the other monitor, but actually it's just blank. Here's a picture I took with my cell phone. I'll be ahead of those creepily astute picture analysts by pointing out I do understand my calendar is still on November.

This is not an animated GIF. I had a lot of trouble uploading JPG and PNG images, so I uploaded this tiny file with lots of grain. It gets the point across, though.

Edit:
I misread your question, so here's what you asked for:

Hmmm...

That is odd. I can see mouse curser/pointer on the second monitor.

Does the second monitor works by it self?

IMHO, later drivers update current production cards, not heritage products.

Hence the bloat in the files.

dunx

P.S. Sorry never run SLI, but had a pair of GTX 460's working fine in my system.

Well, I experienced a small problem as well with SLI and dual monitor setup. If I would plugin the 2nd monitor while the system is running (sli enabled) it would all get ****ed up.
I get no display on the 2nd monitor even though it's being recognized, and the display on my main (GD245HQ) starts having flickering issues. Rebooting etc won't solve it, unplugging the 2nd monitor will not fix the display on the main monitor. Only disabling SLI after having unplugged the 2nd monitor will fix it.

I need to disable SLI first, shut down my pc. Then plug the 2nd monitor in and boot.
After that re-enabled SLI and I didn't have any further issues.

The monitor works with other computers but won't work on my PC. I can drag the mouse across it with this computer, though that's it. Set to be the main monitor, it goes blank.

This might be the solution! It sounds right. The main issue is that I can't disable SLI. I might have to unplug this second monitor, restart, disable SLI, shut down, plug in the second monitor, and then enable SLI. Seems reasonable...

Which video card(s) should these two use? Just the "main" card seems like the way to go IIRC.

Sorry, forgot to respond. No particular reason. I just figured since it had been happening for hundreds or maybe a thousand driver releases, it's definitely in the setting up of these things rather than in the hardware.

Do you have a second newer flat screen monitor, or can you borrow a newer flat screen monitor to test with your SLI and with your main flat screen monitor?

Im just thinking out loud here, but its possible that the old monitor is ...just too old to work properly with your system. In many cases it shouldnt be an issue when you have a simple multi monitor set up, but its worth a try with 2 newer monitors.

I have some others I can try. Just getting a black background and my mouse pointer on this shows me that it mostly works, though. If by tomorrow (after waking up today) I still can't get this going, I'll switch over. Cool suggestion.

The original point came up when I had Visual Studio and a browser open at the same time. I used that fancy Windows 7 feature to snap the windows to half screen space, but then I had a chat window I'd have to keep Alt+tabbing to. I figured I'd hook up this little 15" LCD just for chat. There's a 22" Samsung I could try, but I feel it might be overkill. biggrin.gif

Besides, I've finished the code I had been working on.
