The whole "trashtalking is a part of gaming culture" argument is a pile of rubbish in my opinion. You always get a much better experience from LAN parties and gaming sessions when you have friendly people playing games together. I've never even been at an event where people liked trashtalking during games, I've even organized some smaller LANs and so on and people were overly friendly all the time. And that goes back well over a decade. Trashtalking wont enhance the experience at all and there's really no point unless you're making money from the game, in which case you're also most likely sponsored and good behavior should be expected.

And there's no point even trying to bring up free speech or something along those lines. It's Riot's game and they can prevent you from saying stuff if they want and if you don't play by their rules they'll ban you. Nothing wrong, illegal or strange about that. Same goes for any privately owned service where you interact with other people, twitter, fb, ocn etc.

I've found in my life that trash talking usually generates from trashy people. Seriously, is it that hard to play a friendly game without resorting to acting like an infantile two year old? That is what is supposed to separate civilized human beings from the apes...

Some good points brought out in this thread. thumb.gif

I've enjoyed the feedback from both sides so far.

Clan Wars in the MMO game World Of Tanks is very much like this. You essentially can't be unprofessional lest your entire clan be punished. If you're unruly once and it's reported, you suffer a 24-hour ban from World of Tanks and your clan can't make any maneuvers to retaliate against anyone who may or may not attack your territory; I.E. like a game of Risk but you don't get a turn after they attack you. After the second offense, you personally suffer a 3-7 day ban and equivalent time against your clan is in effect from then on. The third strike is permanent; 30 day ban from WoT and you cannot participate in Clan Wars again on top of your clan being out of the CW game for 30 days as well. Essentially the Admins block your account from joining another clan ever again.

It's pretty harsh, but players deal with enough crap from the public random battles they've gotta grind through.

I find this punishment to be overly fair. If you wanna be a D-bag, you can do it somewhere else. He even LOOKS the part in that picture. Looks totally creepy if you ask me.

Actually, age is tied to their ability to make money. My dad said his boss fired some guy the other day for acting like a 12-year old. His peers & the admin didn't like his attitude.

Never said I took part in the trash talking. It's not really in my nature; what I am oppose to, however, is the developer actively shaping the way users communicate with eachother. Personally, I find unmoderated conversation more appealing (even entertaining.) I remember in my SC:BW days, I'd often exploit the nature of hot headed players to make them turn against eachother. It was not only amusing, but it added whole new dimensions to the game. If there were strict consequences to in game conduct, they would've likely turned to silence instead.
As a whole, moderating peoples' conduct in-game only takes away from the whole experience. Just leave people be what they are. Ignore the idiots, stand up for yourself if you feel like it, make friends with the people you like, whatever. Are people really so sensitive that they prefer a watered down, moderated experience instead of the real thing? I'd much prefer people just be what they are; otherwise what's the point of even communicating?

See it is stuff like this that stopped me playing online.

If I had a good match there would be a barrage of people accusing me of cheating.
If I had a bad match I would be called a noob.
If I sniped I would be called a camper (news flash guys, if you think I am camping then you know where I am - grenade time).

I started off turning off voice and then eventually stopped playing on public servers. I don't play with obnoxious people in real life, why should I do so online?

I think RIOT have the right idea - they are trying to promote a sport. In most professional sports sportsmanship is valued. Real players, whilst they are determined to win, will respect their opponents.

I've played competitive sports, and competitive video games. There is a stark contrast in the level of sportsmanship between these two environments. When I played football, my coach was the arbiter and example of proper behavior for a young man. If I started to get mouthy with a ref or another player he would grab me by my face-mask and throw my butt on the bench. It might not have been obvious to me as a kid, but slowly it sunk in; that is not how competitive athletes behave with each other. When we jump forward to my days of competitive fighting games in college, the story is much different. Players were overtly rude and hostile to each other, and a "thug" mentality seemed to permeate the scene. It was not something I expected or enjoyed. Some of you might have heard about that Capcom sponsored "reality" show where that player was criticized for his obviously warped, sexist views on female players. In a scene where there has been nothing but lose moderation of behavior, it was nice to see some accountability, for a change. This has been the reality of the video game competitive scene for years and years, in my experience.

Currently, I play Dota 2 and I find that as you push towards higher matchmaking brackets, things tend to be more civil (on the whole.) However, the lower brackets are like some horrible kindergarten playpen. I'll freely admit that I can get into it with some players, but this usually after this particular person has been needlessly belligerent or abusive to me or another player. The mute feature is great, and Valve even notifies you if any of your reports result in disciplinary action. I don't follow the LoL competitive scene like do with Dota 2, but this clown sounds like he had this coming for a long time. I've read that he was before the Riot "tribunal" something like 9 times for related behavior prior to this action.

So what is my point here? In every other facet of competitive sports that are more widespread it is expected that players conduct themselves with dignity and respect. If they do not behave in such a manner then there is a regulatory body that enacts disciplinary action to the offending athlete. Quite simply, that sort of behavior is not tolerated. If e-sports wants to be taken more seriously in Western culture (which they absolutely do) then they need to start emulating the larger sports organizations. This includes requiring and enforcing sportsmanlike conduct for their pro-players. Riot did the right there here, and this buffoon got just enough rope to hang himself.
