2 of 3 PC's randomly lost internet?

I have a home network, 3 PC's. All 3 are in my sig rig for hardware/os details(all modern/new with windows 7 64 bit)

Last night at 9 PM everything was perfect on all 3. the wife was on her PC surfing the net, I was on mine using TeamViewer to use the server. I didn't do or change anything, on compleated normal tasks on my home server. but all 3 PC's worked just fine on the web and using the internet.

Now the home server and her PC have no connection. The icon in the task bar says they have internet connectivity, but the browser won't work. I tried to reset to switch and modem, nothing. Then I tried to release and renew the IP adress via CMD. No dice but its weird

when I release my IP address it gives me an error. Something about feedback loop and no file existing. Once I renew my IP adress it gives me the exact same one as before.. any ideas?? No internet feature's work, even though it says I have full internet connectivity? whats going on?

khaotic

try this.. go into network and sharing centre, up the top, click on the globe icon above internet in the network summary.
that should open your browser, see if the internet works..this happens to me sometimes.

failing that we need more info on your network setup.. ie what's plugged into which device..do all machines connect directly to the modem or the 'server'..is the server providing ip addresses via dhcp?

Can you ping out to the WAN @ something like 8.8.8.8?
That would tell you if it's an application or DNS issue.

Ok, Thank you for the responce.
A: No, no internet was available even though it said "Internet Access". Steam, Google Talk, none of it worked.

B: Ping out's failed due to time out error. and I use Google's DNS server's by default smile.gif

I tried to /release and /renew my IP adress and things went funny. Release went fine, Renew gave errors and that's when I had to go to work.

I literally left for work after this post and just got back home. First thing I tried was to renew an IP adress and it went though with no errors this time.

Literally the error just fixed its self at some point in the last 12 hours, I don't even know what the problem was lol.

anyway, rep to the both of you for trying to assist me in trouble shooting. Thanks for the effort:)

The Modem is from TimeWarner Cable, followed by a link-sys hub.

Both are "dumb" box's with absolutly no settings I can change what so ever on them.

If it was the router or switch wouldn't all 3 PC's be affected? My sig rig was unaffected. The home server and the wife's PC were unable /renew the IP address, My sig rig could though.

Cisco 2100 Cable Modem> Link-sys 10/100 5 port hub

I would switch modem's but TWC wants too much in rental fee's for an upgraded modem. They will allow me to flash over one of these Modems (one of the first 5 for Turbo, extreme and ultimate plans.

Not always.

I had a cheap 10/100/1000 switch that was a "Green" switch, and the damn thing kept, seemingly, randomly shutting off various ports.

TRENDnet TEG-S80G Unmanaged 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Gigabit GREENnet Switch

For some reason, it wouldn't do that to my machine, the NAS, or the WDTV Live Hub system, but it would do it on my wife's port and one other port.

I would have to kill it with fire! lol.

I was however given a D-Link DI-604 Ethernet Broadband Modem (Product Link). I don't know if its a quality unit but it was given to me for free(in working condition I am told). I am thinking for the time being I will replace my 4 port Dummy hub with it, mainly so I can have some control over my home network.

Anyone ever use or hear about it before? would I be wasting my time?

Yes, about 5 years ago I used one. It was a fine unit that worked fine. I picked it up because it had a good review and had a nice VPN system built into it. The only reason I got rid of it was because it wasn't gigabit speed.

I would love a gigabit router but really don't need one that fast, Most of my network traffic is streaming movies and music. I'm also planning on making the move to Google Fiber soon.. I don't want to spend good money on hardware when their's is probably going to be better.

Glad to hear it has a built in VPN system, That would be great! I'll set it up this weekend. Thanks Knucklehead!
