You either get a delay of death on the player's screen getting shot, or "bad hit registration" on the shooter's side. Can't really "win" in this issue, it's lose/lose for the developer.
Every time you die behind cover, it's because he got enough bullets into you before you went into cover on his screen. Sounds about right to me.

Server Side hit detection eliminates the "bending bullets" but it introduces bullet delay. Red Orchestra 2 uses this system.
Both systems work well in good conditions and both have their challenges. Fast shooters tend to like the Client side system more.

Client side hit detection works well in THEORY.

BF3 is a completely different story and takes hit-reg delay to a whole new level...if the thousands of posts/threads in BF3 forums weren't indicative enough.

.
(I know the last scene in this clip in this is good ol' suppression)

I've been playing online games/shooters for a long time but never encountered such insane delays (even at 12ms ping from server) and hit registration lag.

I have about 180 hours logged in BC2, only 30 hours in BF3, that really shows I have lost faith in the series. those videos are the exact reason why I quit playing battlefield 3. everyone was saying "its a major improvement over bad company 2", the hit detection is the same if not worse, being a sniper is almost unbearable. anyone who questions BF3 lag can go play a local game of counter strike with 15ping, the difference is tremendous. I've had halo 4 a couple of weeks and I'm already at 40+ hours in multiplayer. super graphics and tons of content doesn't make the game better. the fact that I have gotten more enjoyment out of a console game is just sad lol

I have lost faith in most PC gaming in general. Games older than 3 years seem to be most enjoyable still.

Newbies or people that didn't play as often as others could compete because the M16's were good all-around guns, and they could go up against people who had unlocked the harder hitting guns like the SCAR-H or G3A3 or M60 that had faster time-to-kills in the hands of skilled players.
That goes to your point I bolded; that's exactly where DICE should focus the balancing and then leave all the guns alone. The guns that still hit harder on paper have been balanced to the point where they don't outperform the lesser caliber guns anymore. Now it's to the point where the fastest fire rates and reload speeds almost always win. Players that run guns with tiny mags and bigger recoil should get the reward of the higher damage (BETA and right after BETA) if they give up those insane fire rates/high count mags/ultra fast reloads. If my trusty old SCAR-H still hit as hard as it did in the BETA I'd use nothing but that, and on single fire most of the time... But, as the game stands now, you kinda have to use certain guns to compete.
I tend to agree with some of you: there are enough weapons in the game. They should just nail the balance down.
And as a side note I'll say: They did an outstanding job on the Aftermath maps...on the Aftermath dlc in general.

Yeah and don't get me wrong I think the M16 should be kept the same. In fact I don't even have a problem with it remaining the go to all around gun. Your Scar H example suits my point perfectly though. It really ought to still do 34 damage per shot up close. Them putting it down to 30 basically neutered the gun and while it's better then the other carbines at range you will get absolutely slaughtered iin CQ by anyone who even has half a clue what they are doing. And the issue is that even though the higher damage does keep it good at range it's still not that much better all things considered. I'd take the M4 10/10 in any situation. It shouldn't be like that.

They could go about fixing it in a lot of ways to. Buff the min damage slightly and make it clearly the best carbine at range or buff the max damage and make it a better all around gun. As it is it's only ok and really not the best option for anything. It's a shame to because I like you am a pretty big fan of the Scar H.

Another thing they could do to really go a long way towards fixing weapon balance issues is just lowering the reload t imes on most weapons. The FAMAS for example is actually a pretty decent gun all things considred but the problem is that it's an explicitly CQ weapon with a gigantic reload time combined with a low clip. You gotta balance it out obviously but as it is the most you can do is hose down two people and then die while reloading. Rather then mess with the recoil (which DICE loves to do) give it it's five bullets back or drop a second off the reload animation. Doesn't matter which one you pick because both make the gun infinitely more usable and I still think it's a long way from being OP.

If BF3 balancing has taught me anything it's that trying to balance weapons around recoil does not work. Especially on PC where it's easy to control.

Yup. People will "settle" into weapons that fit their play style...
