[The Tech Report] Radeon HD 7950 vs. GeForce GTX 660 Ti revisited - Page 19

Im dying to know these benchmarks, as someone whose been struggling to decide between these Nvidea and Radeon for the past few weeks.
So far what I've seen have been:
HD 7870 is on tier as gtx 660ti
HD 7950 on tier as the gtx 670
HD 7970 a bit lesser then the gtx 680 though able to surpass it when overclocked.

some one please bench these fairly..

No way a 7870 is on par with a 660ti but other wise correct.

From benches I read online and actually owning both a 7870 and 660ti.

Since you owned both ... by how much is the GTX 660 Ti faster?

On the other hand, the Zotac runs at 125MHz above stock, turboing 150MHz above stock.
If that is fair, then something's wrong.

No, I'm right. Go back and read the article again.

The Vapor-X they used has a 950mhz boost clock. That's 25mhz over the stock 7950 boost. It's clearly stated on the first page of the review.

Show me a 7950 with a higher oc from the factory if the review is not fair.

I would have to say at stock rough guess just from feel, around 10% in some games and as much as 30% in others. I never benched directly against each other but going from feel, and fraps runs I can remember. I was kinda surprised to, as I heard that the 192bit bus would kill the cards performance, but max everything just fine.

To put everything to bed once and for all though, i asked a few users to try and get together so we can bench the three cards all together, find out once and for all the story.

I get 1304 in a Heaven benchmark with 8x, 16x and extreme tess at 1920x1080. I do remember seeing a thread with GTX 680 Benchs in it located - http://www.overclock.net/t/1264349/gtx-680-heaven-3-0-benchmarking - Here.

And Ill give you this link to my OC'd Gigabyte 7950 WF3 Heaven Benchmark that I made to prove my load temps with air cooling to some non believers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8qJ5lpPcRg

Looks like my OC'd 7950 matches a 680 stock and is pretty well evenly matched with the 670 after an overclock?

Seeing how our processors are pretty much the same care to do some benchmarking in games vs mine? I have no delusions of beating a 7950 all out, but wanna show 660ti's do not get destroyed.

I suggest crysis bench, metro 2033 bench, heaven, 3dmark11 open to suggestions though if your down man.

If I spend $300 on AMD and $300 on Nvidia, then that is a fair comparison. Let's say retailers are selling the GTX 670 for $300 and the 7870 for $300 (obviously they're not, but for the sake of argument). Then the 7870 vs 670 is a fair fight at stock and Max OC. When saying that the Zotac has this OC and the 7950 has that OC and it's not enough and all and everything, that's not what The Tech Report was going for. They grabbed two cards for about the same price (the Radeon is actually more expensive) and threw them into a system at their stock settings.
TL;DR: They were benching dollar for dollar, not clock for clock. Could some better choices have been made about which 7950 should have been selected? Perhaps.

Whatever. But that 660Ti is almost at its clock ceiling (due to the stock overclock), while the 7950 has a large headroom.

By those means, the comparison isn't especially fair, because one card runs at almost stock and the other one has a huge overclock.

Now if they named the article 'Sapphire HD7950 Vapor-X vs Zotac GTX660Ti AMP!', then yes, the article would be correct.

I have 3DMark11 and Heaven. I dont do a ton of benching on different programs so I have never even seen crysis or metro 2033. I overclock for gaming performance not to show off my epeen biggrin.gif. But if you point me in the direction for the download for crysis bench and metro bench Ill gladly do some benching.

News threads aren't the place for benchmark competitions. Please start another thread in the Graphics Card section. On that note, I'd be more than happy to throw my reference AMD 7950 in to the benchmarking results at various clock speeds.
