That would be your best bet, but add in more RAM (if you can) and also, you should consider buying an SSD (solid state disk), it can be used with a hard drive, but with speeds much greater than possibly achieved by a HDD.

(Another idea for you)... LGA775 motherboards are not too expensive now, you should consider purchasing a used motherboard that can use your ddr2 ram on from eBay so you can have newer features that are available.

If you wanted to save on the budget, but still get some gaming options you could go with an A10-5800 APU. It doesn't do too bad.

Then you don't have to even buy a GPU right now and you can save up and get something nicer. Most of the low end graphics cards will barely be much better than the IGP in the APU. Run off the APU and then move up when you get the budget...or you may find the APU does everything you need it too and just be happy.

I think too many people over look it yet...for roughly $120 USD you can get a APU that will pull 50fps in BF3 on low settings...if you can survive with 35ps or so you can even approach into the medium settings. How many CPU and GPU combos for $120 can do that? (note that isn't including a motherboard...socket F2 motherboards are about the same cost as another socket though...You could easily get by with a total system cost of $300 for a APU, Motherboard, Memory, and PSU...perhaps less.)

Later you can stick in a dedicated GPU and get all the gaming joys of having a more expensive CPU as well.

Note: I don't see anything wrong with trying to find a quad core socket 775 CPU for cheap either. Though you are still going to be looking at spending around $150 to get one of those and a graphics card that is an upgrade...you might need a new PSU as well. Before you know it you might be near the cost of getting a brand new APU system. Plus you'd probably be able to get a little bit for selling the old stuff...$50-75 or so depending how lucky you got on ebay I'd think.
