Help with Custom Fan Cables & Custom Fan Splitter Cables

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I like most of you that participate in this section probably don't like cabling. The cabling is probably the bit I like least about building a system lol

So I've got a few new parts to go into my system and figured while I had some of it torn down it might be a good idea to try really cleaning up the cables and I figure the fan cables are probably the easiest to start with. I also have 12 Fans in there so thats a lot of fan cable everywhere.

Basically I'm looking to do two things

1. I want to Customize the length of the actual fan cable

2. I want to make my own fan spliters.

Now making the fans cable shorter seems simple enough, chop the cable down to desired length strip back the sleeve attach new power connector pins (not sure what I should buy to crimp them though) and a new 3 pin plug, seems simple enough, will probably sleeve them also. If I've missed something here please let me know.

Making the fan spliter cables is what I'm not sure about. Currently I'm using some Phoyba Fan Spliters, 3 pin 3* 6 pin adapter, 3 pin 3* 4 pin adapter and 3 pin 3* 2 pin adapter. There great adapters, however there just far to long, like 60cm or something crazy! I'd prefer something far shorter and I don't know how to even go about making one of these myself.

I need to know what wires I need to buy, and how to connect them all up to each other. I have a soldering Iron but not really used it. I tried to solder two wires together once and it didn't work, perhaps I had the wrong type of solder, I have no idea. So help with soldering would no doubt be useful, think my soldering iron is a 30 watt one.

This is what I've already chosen for the Fan Cables Mod

This is what I think I should use for the Fan Splitter Ends

They also supply these wires at WCUK, would it be suitable for my Spliter cable?

Also would these cable compression pliers be of use or should I go for something else?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You don't need to use the 4-pin molex on that, you can attach one 3-pin as "input" and it will "output" to the other five 3-pins. Since it's all black IMHO looks a lot cleaner than a cable which is split into many.

The wire sizes you linked are too big. That's 18 AWG (european size would be 0.75mm2) and those fan pins need smaller 26 AWG (european size 0.14mm2). Here you can get 25m for under 2 quid: http://www.conrad-uk.com/ce/en/product/605913/1-x-014-mm-Black-Coil-25-m-Conrad/2510112&ref=list

About crimping. I don't think the crimper you linked is ideal. For those fan pins you would need the Molex MiniFitJr tool (or the MDPC one). But it's fine to use long-nose pliers instead.

About soldering small wires. Pre-tin both wire ends, dip them in flux and then join them like this guy does.

Hey matey thanks for the feedback.

That Phoyba Device does look quite neat, however I need to put 6 fans all on one channel as I run all 6 on an RX360 Radiator in Push/Pull configuration and I'd like to be able to control the RPM.

I also want to run 4 fans on another channel, two on the RX240 in Pull and another 2 on the (soon to be installed) RX120 in Push/Pull

And a further 2 fans on another channel, front and rear intakes fans. Basically all the Rad fans are XSPC 1200 RPM or 1650 RPM fans and the 2 Intake fans are Bit Fenix Spectre Pros.

Hopefully be making custom Splitters and adjusting fan cable lengths I can still achieve a much tidier look than now, as there just far far to long. This is all for the back panel also, none of the cabling can be seen from the front, its just I like to try and keep the back panel cabling tidier smile.gif

Thanks for the advice on the wire, another company SpecialTech does some wire aswell, would 24AWG be ok to use? They also sell those Phoyba Kits I linked earlier, be nice to be able to get the stuff from all the same place. I may also buy another Splitter just to take it apart to see what they've done so I can try replicate it, with one difference, much shorter.

Cheers

sorry to hijack but how would that work, 3 pin from my fancontroller to this PCB, and than connect the fans? Don't think I can read the rpm if I do it like this?

Indeed the rpm lines are not connected. There are two traces: 12V and ground. Other pins are just for physical compatibility.

You could split off the rpm line from one fan and repin it directly to the fancontroller connector.

That PCB can of course be connected to an Aquaero, but I'm guessing you mean something else? I'm pretty sure you can expand the Aquaero using the Poweradjust accessory to increase the number of fan channels. But you're better off asking about that in the watercooling forum or directly to Aquacomputer themselves.

thanks, but let me explain.

360 in top push pull = 6 fans
240 in bottom push pull = 4 fans
2 intake fans
1 exhaust fan

I want to control the rad fans on 1 header for the top, and 1 header for the bottom rad
than t 3 airflow fans will be separate.

My idea was to put a pcb behind the aquaero in the bay, and have the top rad fan cables going there ( will make the right lenght cables, And they will be behind the rad out of sight )
The bottom rad has space behind it, so I can put a pcb there, and then have 1 cable going to the aquaero.

The case fans will be sleeved separately.

This way I don't have to solder. But this will only work if I have a pcb for 3 pin fans.

First you need to be sure that the Aquaero can deliver enough power on one channel for all 6 top fans. This is why the poweradjust accessory might be a good idea.

Other ideas would be either to chain two PCBs together; or try to crimp double wires into the pins at the PCB side.
