Upgrading Old Build Need Advice

Thread Starter
My new build will incorporate some parts from the rig in my signature.

CPU: core i7-2600K http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-2600K-Quad-Core-Processor-Cache/dp/B004FA8NOQ/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT1_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=EPUC0V0BCXZN&coliid=I26WF9CA2Z2YMM

CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H80 http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Performance-Liquid-Cooler-CWCH80/dp/B0051U7HMI/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1354739469&sr=1-1&keywords=corsair+H80
Does anyone know if this will fit into the Silverstone raven (version 1)?

Motherboard: Asus sabertooth Z77 (http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-SABERTOOTH-Z77-Intel-Motherboard/dp/B007RIFKUS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=EPUC0V0BCXZN&coliid=IWK70T2K1V8S2

Graphics: EVGA GeForce GTX 570

Power: Corsair 1000W HX

OS: WIndows 8

Case: Silverstone Raven (version 1)

This is where I needed help deciding what to upgrade:

Will the RAM in my signature (found here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145224) work in my new motherboard?

Or would I be better off purchasing CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3? Will i see a dramatic difference in performance going from 6 gb of RAM to 16gb?

Or should I upgrade to a SSD for WIndows 8? I was looking at OCZ 128GB Vertex 4 (http://www.amazon.com/OCZ-Technology-2-5-Inch-Industrys-Warranty/dp/B007R1FH3K/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=EPUC0V0BCXZN&coliid=IF1WFXE9X1THD)

I only have enough money to upgrade either the RAM or get a SSD so I would very much appreciate to hear your opinions on what is the best bang for my buck.

Thanks for the help in advance smile.gif

First off, don't get the Sabertooth - it is overpriced and basically just a P8Z77-V with some plastic on it. Just get the P8Z77-V instead.

The RAM you have will technically work, but since it is a tri-channel kit, and you want dual channel for Ivy, you'd be better off just getting something new (or just using 4GB of what you have - not ideal). The Samsung 30nm stuff is a great deal at $35 for 8GB of DDR3-1600 (no reason to get anything faster).

And if you are getting a Z77 motherboard, why not just get an Ivy chip to go with it. Either the 3570K (if you are primarily gaming) or the 3770K (if you primarily do video editing or CPU intensive tasks). No reason to buy outdated tech at this point.

Oh, and definitely get a SSD - if you ditch the Sabertooth for the P8Z77-V or P8Z77-V LK and then go from the 2600K to a 3570K, you should have enough budget left over for a 128GB Samsung 830.

I would absolutely get an SSD if you're doing ANY new build today. Even smaller ones around 120gb are perfect for OS drives, then you get regular mechanical HDD for your data/storage. With regards to the mobo those Sabertooth boards have a unique look, but that's about it. While there is nothing wrong with a i7 2600k SB (I like mine), perhaps consider the 3770K since Ivy is the latest generation.
