Looking to buy a gtx 680 or 7970 that isn't voltage locked..

I just bought an asus matrix 7970 platinum for $550 and it's voltage locked to 1.256 so all I could get out of it is a 1175mhz overclock. I have no idea how to bios edit and it seems nobody has a solution for it. I'm going to return it today but I want to order another card today so I can have it by friday.

I could get the gtx 680 lightning and flash the bios but is it worth the $600 compared to the other 680s that could possibly do the same? What gtx 680 or 7970 should I buy?

a voltage of 1.256 really isn't limiting anything, that is just an average chip.

FWIW it's posted by others in multiple threads that returning a card because it isn't a golden overclocker is pretty shady.

1.256 is already a pretty high voltage, or am i getting outdated?

I modded the bios on my gtx 570 dcuiis, and the max voltage i could get was 1.213v. without modding the bios it was 1.1v.

you have more voltage then me on my modded bios.

it's quiet easy to unlock the voltage on a gtx 680. it's a 1-2 minute process. my card was a horrible clocker but after the bios mod I gained 67mhz core. not bad eh. temps didn't even go up which is weird.

with that said I'd rather just get another 7970. you just got unlucky. that's the silicon lottery being a b for ya

the card has an option to turn the voltage up to 1.4v but I hear around 1.35 is enough for a 1300mhz overclock if the card can handle it. My card can barely oc to 1175mhz since I can't change the voltage, which is not what I paid $550 for :\

I'm thinking of avoiding asus graphics cards completely and going for an msi card (680 lightning), that way I'll never have to use gputweak which is a piece of ****.

You bought an ASUS matrix 7970 and it was voltage locked?

I thought the point to those cards was adjusting the voltage and its fancy power phases...

the MSI HD 7970 Lightning is a good option. Unless you want nvidia specific features like Physx , HD 7970 is the card to get. its the fastest card. overclocking only reaffirms that fact.
