Trying to overclock my Q8400

I slapped together a rig with a Q8400 in it, this is in fact my first time owning an Intel based rig. Anyway I'm trying to get the thing up to 3.6GHz but for some reason all the voltage controls are disabled and the manual for the motherboard is no help at all...

Motherboard is MSI P43-C51

EDIT: forgot to mention I have already updated it to the latest BIOS

I think Ctrl+F1 or something like that might unlock it, but I don't know if it would be worth it.  To start with, the P43 chipset isn't very good for overclocking.  Then there's the Q8400 which isn't that good either.  To take it further, this motherboard doesn't look like it was designed very well for overclocking because it's lacking certain heatsinks that would help with overclocking.  So, I would not expect a 1 GHz overclock.  It might do 500 MHz (3.16 GHz) or maybe even 750 MHz (3.41 GHz) , but 1 GHz might be very difficult at best.

Of course, there are also the matters of CPU cooling and the power supply.  For the PSU, I'm not talking about the capacity, but instead the quality of its power delivery.  If you have good cooling and a quality-made PSU, then it really all comes down to the CPU and motherboard, except they're not the greatest to begin with.  Edit:  I just realized that I forgot about the importance of the memory.

I'm not taking any pleasure in what I'm saying here; all I'm trying to do is set the possible expectation based on what I'm remember seeing during my time here on OCN.

Well I'm at least going to give it a try, This is all happening inside a Corsair 200 case, and I don't know if you've seen one yet, but these things are made to keep components nice and chilly, it's actually really impressive how well designed the air flow is biggrin.gif

Anyway we'll see, I can get it up to 3.0GHz with no voltage changes so that's a promising start.

Thanks much for the response TwoCables!

EDIT: Ctrl + F1 didn't work, still locked out of voltage control
