$350 Video Cables?? - Page 2

its so expensive b/c of the length

I have a monster 4 footer and it was only 100 bucks...seems a 35foot cable would only be used in certain circumstances--probably not that common

But HDMI is DIGITAL right? so you either get the signal or you don't, it's on or off, you don't have to deal with signal degradation and crap. So even the budget brand cables should provide good performance (assuming they work as they should)

how would you make your own HDMI cable? i know that for component you can use coax and get adapters to change the coax over to rca-style. And can you make your own DVI-HDMI cables? how?

www.cables4sure.com .....50ft DVI 149.99 $10.99 HDMI/DVI Converter

You have to call and get the converter, its not on the site, OR i have an extra one id be happy to send......Make sure you have the setup right because HDMI and DVI are the EXACT same thing, difference is HDMI carries audio and DVI does not.

I think cables are VERY important and can make a huge difference. Yes I wouldnt pay 350 bucks but as others have said thats probably b/c they are so long.

But I do disagree with the majority, Monster Cables are NOT overrated. They do make a difference. Also why spend over a thousand bucks for a high end HDTV and then use crappy cables to hook it up with eh?

Yes, we make custom high-end cables for around $150 Canadian. Monster is a great company, but a cable like that we sell for $100-120. Max $150.

You have to buy a cable in proportion to what your tv cost you. I'd say for a $4000 tv, something in the range of $120-150 from Monster would be fine. Well, at our prices :S

Best Buy and Futureshop have unusually high prices almost all the time. I hate them, because people still buy from them. Then they get no service. Then they go back >.< Then they come to us for help lol

Only the most expensive Plasma/Projector could justify that kind of price for cables.... QED is a great British company that is known for their cables in general, and there others for sure.

From somebody who knows a thing or 2, I'd say:
  1. Don't go Component, it's outdated
  2. Spend no more than 100$ for an HDMI cable
  3. It's perfectly normal to see astronomical prices if you need a huge quantity.

WE are using DVI @ my house, mainly because the PJ and the Satellite box support this interface natively. And frankly we have a pretty expensive setup and don't have cable of that price (except for the 0.5' interconnects between the CD Player and the Amp).

Even digital cables can suffer from data loss on poor cables.

This can lead to loss of sharpness, clarity, colour accuracy and vibrancy.

OFC (oxygen free copper) with 99.999% purity or higher are very expensive to produce and terminate the cables with connectors that are air tight and very high spec.

I once though "expensive" cables were not a neccessity until I challenged them, against cheeper alternatives and found the difference is amazing. The cable in question were Phono cables (£120 for 0.5m) for connecting Amp>CD Player not video but the principle is the same.

$350 seems a lot of money (and maybe overpriced) but never under estimate the quality of good interconnects.

Typically 10% of a systems cost should be spent on interconnects.

Monster makes nice cables, but your paying for the name more than anything.
Other places make nice cables too for a fraction of the cost, and there is no differance in the picture quality unless you buy the cheap Kmart ones, LOL
I think my DVI cable is a Monster,I have a few Monster cables on my wide screen TV, my dog chewed the one going to my subwoofer, I got a cheaper replacement I can't tell any differance, My wallet did though.

A couple of my friends work in electrical stores as sales people. Basically, yes monster cables are well made, but they are a product that provides massive (Over 100%) profit to the seller. In other words - RIP OFF!!!

Also, since its HDMI your dealing with, the quality of the cables will NOT affect signal clarity. If there is a path for electrons to flow from point A to point B, the picture will be fine. You only have to worry about shielding in analogue cables, and even then, its not too big a deal. Remember, HDMI is DIGITAL. The cables are carrying pulses of current. It doesnt matter if one pulse is slightly less than the other because either way it will be assumed as a 1, and nothing as a 0. Gold connectors I can see the point in because your ensuring that the cable makes proper contact to avoid loss of signal when the cable is slightly knocked and also to prevent corrosion since it its this part exposed to the atmosphere. The actual cables inside the plastic coating will not oxidise quickly. And even if they do slightly (which is very unlikely) they will still be able to conduct. They will only cease to conduct if they corrode right the way through (Not gonna happen unless you break the sheathing) or a break occurs in the wire. Since its for a TV, your not going to be moving the cables around alot so a break isnt likely to develop.

Id go budget. You won't be able to tell the difference when using HDMI between a good cable and a bad cable!!!
