Hi all just wondering what the durability of audio technica headphones is like. to be more specific I would like to know about m50's.

Just wondering how long before I get say a short in one of the speakers or the jack.

What I'll be doing with the headphones on.
  • sleeping
  • biking
  • hiking

biking and hiking with full size headphones? and you worry about how long before a short... if the headphones are well taken care of it shouldn't be much of a problem but with those activities I'd recommend some good IEM's instead.

IEM's. AKA, the earbuds that go into your ear canal. Stands for in-ear monitors.

M50s are really well built. That being said, they aren't that good for the uses you mentioned. As the others said, IEMs are much better suited to that.

Hey. I have the ATH-M50's and I must say that they are AWESOME!

I've gone fore looooong walks with them, slept wearing them, played games wearing them (the sound quality is just insanity; playing BF3 hearing every part of the crack of a bullet; compared to turtlebeaches these are in a league of their own!) ran with them (awkward but achievable tongue.gif). I wouldn't recommend riding a bike with them but where I am on the South Coast of England you pretty much have to ride on roads which are always wet and busy so having your spacial awareness reduced by these considering that they block out sound very well is a bad plan indeed.

Anyway I'd say that they are very durable as I've slept on them a few times by accident. They feel very solid and well... not cheap. The pivots on it are strong and it reverts to it's packaged state by simply flipping the ear-cups upside down and flipping the section above the earcups upward smile.gif

I listen to music with them on full blast pretty often and no problems since I bought them half a year ago. The connector is as solid as they go feeling of solid metal and having a gold-plated mini-plug. The spring ensures that the cable won't bend at awkward angles.

Side Note: The ATH-M50 is the coiled cable version, and the ATH-M50S is the straight cable version; I'd recommend the coiled cable version for practicality as you don't have cables trailing all about the place but that's down to personal opinion thumb.gif

Probably the best things that I've ever spent money on!
