my new 7870 is freezing my system?

my open box 7870 powercolor vortex2 arrived today and i installed it. i downloaded drivers from the amd site.i thencranked up guildwars 2 to all the best settings and it ran gloriously, for a bit. then the screen got all crazy and black and grey veritcal lines covered teh screen, alt tabbing didnt solve it.basicly all ive been able to do is restart the computer. its been happening every time. any ideas?

did i install it wrong
is my psu sufficient (750 gold seasonic)
do i just different drivers
is the videocard itself damaged?

also,is it normal for the videocard fans to do be alternating constantly in an extreme variation of rpms? one second its mega, then next, chilling out.

its also worth mentioning this is my first pcie card.

Try a different driver to see if that solves the issue. If not, I'd stress test the video card to see if the card is artifacting at the current clocks you have. If you see the same artifacts I would return the card back to the seller or if you can't, RMA it.

is there an easy way of removing the drivers to replace them with others?

what program do you use to stress test a videocard?

Run the driver.exe and choose uninstall. Once done, do not reboot yet, go to control panel and uninstall the CIM, catalyst install manager, choose remove all. Reboot and its clean.

If you're using 12.11 try an earlier version. 12.6 maybe? You can find the previous versions here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx
As for stress testing try Furmark or OCCT.

Your psu is definitely enough. I would make sure the power pins are in there properly.

Just curious, but where did you buy it from? I just bought this same card from NCIX Canada and there are about 5 people on their forums who have had this black screen issue when running any 3d applications. Another guy had to boost the vcore to get it to work at the 1150 core it ships out in, and another downclocked it. Then NCIX discontinued the card so I'm thinking Powercolor put out a bad batch or something. I've yet to receive mine even though I ordered it on Black Friday, right before all these forum posts started popping up, because there was an issue with the payment processing. I'm a little worried now though, the only reason I haven't gone ahead and asked to change my order is because it was on sale for 199.99 during Black Friday, so I'm going to take a chance. This black screen issue seems to plaguing the 7870 from all of the AIB partners, although Sapphire was the most prominent.

It's strange though, I would expect a retailer to make sure a video card is working properly before selling it open box. So, hopefully your case is only a driver issue, and you don't have to deal with a faulty card. thumb.gif

Drivers wouldn't have anything to do with that because its a hardware issue. There's probably a good reason why that card is openbox.
