Help with Build Parts (looking for low z-height if possible, cooler recommendations)

Have parts:
3570K
Z77E-ITX
Vertex 3
Dual Slot Graphics

Need:
RAM, probably 16GB
Case+PSU
Cooler?

Leaning towards MI-008/Element Q but doesn't support dual slot without modding, second choice would be SG05 but I would prefer lower Z-height. Also Element Q style case requires buying another PSU.

No idea what fits on Z77E-ITX and first case or sg05. could anyone provide a list for each case? if you have other case/cooler combo suggestions, please list.
budget for remaining parts is $250 somewhat flexible

My inspirations were Jocelyn84's build for SG05 and I was interested in how armourcore9brker built his mi-01 with a dual slot. any modding suggestions that are quick and easy?....

Ideally build will be <6" high, near silent, sub-70 load temps for CPU+GPU, but I'm guessing I'll have to compromise somewhere.

Also silent fan recommendations for when I have more money are appreciated

For single slot cards there are really 2 decent / semi-decent options

there is the 7750 than can be found easily for less than $140

then there is the single slot 7850 - http://www.afox-corp.com/en/products_details.asp?proid=208

but it is over double the cost - around $300 if I recall correctly.

otherwise the SG05 can a fairly large chunk of the double slot cards (yes it is a bit taller) but volume wise it is less than 10% larger than the Element Q

Oh sorry. I'm not planning on buying ANOTHER single slot card, it's not in the budget. I was looking for modding advice or alternate cases that could fit a dual slot card in less than 6 inches :\.

thanks for the information though.

I didn't actually fit a 6870 in my MI-01. redface.gif
It sits on a bench right now while I work on my other mod.

There are a couple problems with a dual slot in the MI-01.
1) Any GPU with a top power connector will be too tall.
2) Dual slot will require you to cut off a good amount of the side of the case which is used for structural support.

I can try and mod it to see if it will fit (my schedule is spotty though) but you're better off getting a riser card.
Depending on the length of your card, you can fit a dual slot in the case if you use a riser.
With a little modification (ok a lot of modification) I can fit my 6870, H80, a 1U PSU, and a couple HDDs in the case.

There are a few dual slot cases that have a built in riser but they are pretty expensive.

hey, thanks for the response. where exactly would a dual slot card with a riser fit in an MI-01?

pics appreciated.

i have seen a mod where the motherboard mounting is shifted away from the GPU side (because there is "one slot" ish of space on the other side), but I would rather not have to make drastic changes to the case if possible

For reference im trying to fit a 560ti or 680 so about ~9-10 inches
post #6 of 17
Pardon the blurriness.

Mind you I have already modified the internals a bit already.
Having a 3.5" or not is up to you but I would keep a fan there instead.
For reference: The 6870 is a little under 10"

okay. so from what i can see you took out the entire central support and added a front to back bar support on one side only and blocked the original psu opening. can't tell if you did anything else. you'd also have to cut a hole to allow the display output to reach outside and securely mount the GPU? what's the maximum cpu cooler height with this setup?

I'm intrigued tongue.gif

edit: guessing you need more than 200W to power that setup?

That is pretty much the extent of my mod. Irrelevant but I also created a second expansion slot on the other side to fit a fan controller. I cut a hole in the top for an H80. I made a custom HDD bracket to hold 2x3.5" and 2x2.5" drives.
That single support rail holds the PSU in place, a 120mm fan for exhaust, and keeps the HDDs secure. Also useful for cable routing.

Max cooler height is 70-75mm to the motherboard PCB. Now shave off ~6mm for the socket itself and 64-69mm is what you are looking at.

About 115mm depth allowance for PSU if you don't modify the motherboard tray. 125mm if you do.

I have a Seasonic 350W that's pretty deep (130mm!) so it doesn't fit for pictures. A Silverstone 450W SFX psu is only 100mm so it will be the same length as the 200W PSU in the pictures. A non-modular will definitely fit but I wouldn't try to fit a modular Silverstone in there. The other problem is that you're going to have to run the plug to the front. This means that you either have to modify the front bezel or just have a plug coming out of the front (I am a function over form sort of guy so that doesn't particularly bother me).

To do this mod from the state my case is in right now I would have to:
1) Cut a couple expansion slots in the back panel for the GPU. I would probably also take this time to modify the way the back plate sits there.
2) I would make a spacer from the PSU to the bottom of the GPU to keep it up so that the back panel is not supporting all the weight.
3) Cut a hole in the front for PSU exhaust and cut the front panel to route my 90 degree power cable.
4) Mounting brackets for the various HDDs.
5) Cutting holes for various fan locations that need air flow. Good thing with this design is that with a blower cooler, the GPU doesn't dump any (or very little) air into the rest of the case.

You have 2 options on the PCIe riser. Get a solid riser that will provide more support, but be limited available length and exact placement of the GPU. Or get a flexi riser that will allow more flexibility on placement, but provide no support and flexi-risers are more likely to go bad and stop working.

Good luck. thumb.gif

My suggestion is to compromise on the height, because unless relocating the PSU, you will be more limited in cooler height with the Apex/Tt versus the Silverstone. That would be the third strike against those cheaper cases, the other two being having to purchase a better PSU separately, and not supporting a dual slot graphics card.

As for the sugo sg05, here is mine, I am getting a gtx670 for christmas probably. So, its all the stuff I have in here and then the 670 if I get it. It has a z77e itx, nice motherboard, although I replaced the antenna because the one that came with was a little stupid, I just wanted normal antennas.

The airflow is actually amazing, all the cables are away from where the fan is blowing. And the psu is taking air out the case also.
The sg05 is pretty small, and it cannot really be shorter because it has a 120mm fan...
