Ethernet Switch

Thread Starter
I am conflicted between 2 choices.

This: http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-GREENnet-100Mbps-Auto-MDIX-TE100-S50g/dp/B002EP30EM/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1354784535&sr=8-7&keywords=ethernet+switch
And this: http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-GREENnet-100Mbps-Auto-MDIX-TE100-S50g/dp/B002EP30EM/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1354784535&sr=8-7&keywords=ethernet+switch

Also, will using a switch slow down my download speeds in any significant way? Like will I still get about 11 MB/s when only one computer is connected?

A switch splits the speeds between the number of systems connected. So a single PC downloading while connected through the switch will still reap the full download speeds, although you should be aware that each connection point will cause a slight loss in download speeds. So where 11MBps is what you currently get, introducing a switch to the connection will see a slight drop in the download speed.

Also, both links point to the same page wink.gif

Not trying to be rude sunny, but you're wrong.

If the switch has 8 ports at 10/100/1000 Mbps then each interfaces has 10/100/1000 Mbps to any resources located on that switch. It does not get divided by 8.

Not entirely true either. In this case, the network by adding a switch will not have any noticible decrease in connectivity. Yes, there will always be overhead when you add a device a long the line, but a 11 Mbps connection he will mostly keep 99.9% of his bandwidth when adding the switch.

The more network activitity you have on the network will decrease your bandwidth, but if you have 8 devices hooked up at the same time and 7 of them are idle, you will have 10-11 Mbps of download speed for that one active computer.

You linked to the same switches, lol.

Your performance will be the same, the above answer clarifies.
Personally, I would pay a couple dollars more for the gigabit variant.

I don't think I would need that because I am using it fig my college dorm. At most, I would need 4 ports. One to link to the Ethernet, one to link to my laptop, one for my gaming PC, a d one to my roommates PC.
