[Engadget] Tim Cook confirms one line of Macs will be exclusively US-manufactured in 2013

It's not just going to be "some" iMacs that bear the legend "assembled in the USA," but potentially a whole line of Apple's computers from next year. In a TV interview with Brian Williams which will air on NBC tonight, Tim Cook is tipped to confirm that production of one of the existing Mac lines will move to the US wholesale in 2013. As Apple itself doesn't own manufacturing plants, Cook has committed to invest more than $100 million with a partner -- following through on his previously stated desire to see production return to the US.

and a 50% price hike on said mac line promoted as "elite" while having the same or higher failure rate as previous mac lines.

Some people might be willing to pay more for a product that's made in America. That said, don't get your Apple-hating panties in a bundle. It's not going to be 50% more expensive, and what exactly is the rate of failure you're talking about? I'm curious about the actual rate.

Interesting development. Pretty cool if true.

But I have to wonder, given the amount and type of parts used, if this will truly be a "Made in USA" system or rather just an "Assembled in USA" system.

And hipsters will hunt those for the "Made in America" sticker... and it will have "Limited" label on them with price increase...
...and "dudes" will counterfeit them and sell on ebay with 120%-580% price increase...

Soo... you know they buy their parts? And you know from article that will buy parts from USA based fab's... sooooo.... if I buy from any company that makes mobo's and are based in US this still means I have bought something that has inside of it socket from foxcon fabs... sooo.... yeah...

Good to see there's going to be a Made in the USA line.

There will for sure be a price premium. The question is, how much?

At Apple's current price margins, it's fairly likely they could move all production to the US and still make a profit. However, they like their big margins, so they'll likely raise prices some to accommodate.

Nice work Tim. I always appreciate companies making more industry here in the 'States.
