ViewSonic VP2770 Review+Club: 2560x1440 Semi-Glossy PLS - Page 36

Sharpness is more of a matter of taste and purpose of the display. The sharpness setting adds an artificial border around the black and white areas. This increases the contrast so to your eye things look clearer, especially with text. General advice is to set it as low as possible while keeping the image from looking soft. This doesn't necessarily mean set it to zero though. It is possible to set sharpness too low on some displays (black and white can blend to form Grey areas). For what its worth, I left it at 75, a compromise between the accuracy of the image and text enhancement.

Weird that 75 sharpness is better since the few people who had an issue all found 0 to be perfect. Are you not using the default sharpness on the Asus?

Both my VP2770s had proper sharpness at 75, no doubt.

Weird, the differences can probably be partially attributed to the different Windows DPI settings and Clear Type settings people use.

Welp, just got it in from Amazon. One Stuck Blue Pixel smack dab in the center of my monitor. Hopefully I can fix i t.

Also did a stop watch test and didn't see any less input lag, not sure how else to find it when compared to my PB278Q.

Amazon has a much better return+exchange policy and are easier to deal with.

Ideally one would buy a monitor from a local retailer with a no hassle 14-30 day return+exchange policy.

The Flash Timer sucks because it basically throws out random values which typically leads one to average a value twice as high as it should be.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/input_lag.htm

The SMT Tool was the best proven program for testing lag but licenses are no longer being sold. The only other affordable options is the unproven Leo Bodnar lag tester but it has to be connected via HDMI and has a max resolution of 1080p

If you are pretty sensitive to lag you should be able to tell the difference just by moving the mouse around. Make sure to set the Asus's Trace Free setting to 20 to get rid of the overshoot ghosting and the ViewSonic's Response time setting to Advanced.

COMPATIBILITY
PC:
VGA Support up to 2048 x 1152
HDMI Support up to 1920 x 1080
DVI-D/DP support up to 2560 x 1440 (non-interlaced)

Mac®:
VGA Support up to 2048 x 1152 DVI-D / HDMI / DP Support up to 2560 x 1440

So in essence they say that when you're on a PC you only get 1920x1080 over HDMI, while a mac will push out the native resolution over HDMI?? (funny though, no mac has HDMI-ports...)
Since it does support HDMI 1.4 you'd think 2560x1440 shouldn't be a problem, but I rather be sure it does support this at 60hz.

Thanks!

HDMI will be supported as long as you use a graphics card that can output 1440p. The HDMI cable I had lying around, paired with a Radeon HD7970 puts out 1440p same as the DVI-D that came with the panel.

Being an OCing enthusiast I've been reading these forums a good long while, but for some reason never registered. Now that I saw this great thread about this amazing monitor, I just had to take the plunge. So here I am. smile.gif

First off many thanks to MenacingTuba for your efforts and all the information you have provided. I just fired up the ICC profile you have in the first post and the colors look instantly better with the slight red tint completely gone. I've had the VP2770 for a couple of days only and it's my first PLS/IPS screen (my first GOOD monitor also). Could not be more satisfied with it. Well, except for the ah so lovely IPS glow anyway. No dead or stuck pixels, no backlight bleeding, no nothing. Build quality of this thing is just top notch. It's a very sturdy piece of hardware indeed.

Speaking of IPS glow, does it normally vary from unit to unit or are all VP2770s alike in that respect? I found I have very similar glow to that of TMallory's unit, although I believe the camera makes it slightly more apparent than it really is. I can only notice the glow when in a pitch black room with a black background, so it is indeed very manageable. Does everybody else have the same glow on their monitors? TBH it annoys me slightly when for example playing games that are very dark, since you lose some detail off the sides. Despite this I know that pretty much all IPS/PLS monitors without A-TW polarizer have some degree of glow for sure. I'd just like to know if this is completely normal and/or if it's something you can "fix" or somehow make better through RMA (swapping the unit). Don't take me wrong though, I'm very very pleased with the monitor and I'm 99% sure already that it's a keeper. If the glow is something I'm going to have to live with, then so be it.

Cheers

EDIT: oops, posted before finished writing lol

These panels glow a lot less than other IPS type panels. My H-IPS glows like a mother. The blacks are practically grey in dark lit rooms.

All 3 of mine came with a default sharpness of 50%. That's weird. The picture quality is much better at 75%.

PLS panels are hard for Amazon to keep in stock. Some batches are really high quality, others are awful. I went through 2 really really bad panels before getting a pixel perfect one, and even the one I decided to keep has a sub-par backlight.

But comparing it to my PB278Q, everything looks slightly more blurry on the viewsonic.

I have both monitors hooked up to my 680 lightning, the VP on DVI-D, and the PB on DP. When i drag this window for instance over to the PB, everything (text.icons) looks a bit sharper.

Ive read that they use the same semi-gloss coating so what could be causing this?

Turn sharpness up to 75%.
