Help With Bro's Crazy 1090 & ASUS MoBo!!

Thread Starter
ARGGGGH!! Been round my bro's trying to help him clock his 1090T and it has to be the most frustrating CPU i have ever had the (dis)pleasure of tinkering with. He has the same MoBo and BIOS the same DDR3 (but he has a 660ti and a 1090t). The X6 will go to about 3.6 on default VCore BUT for 3.9 (never got higher stable) it will need 1.50v with LLC ON!!!!! It is without a doubt the worst clocking CPU i have ever seen.

Plus the MoBo has now started to warp!! my bro undid one of the screws that fasten it to the case and it was under that much pressure it tore off the standoff leaving the thread still in the case tray!! i have had to remove two of the top screws because it was bowing so bad. BUT when i fitted the MoBo for him i don't remember it being warped at all!! Is there anything we can do to straighten it out? as i can get my index finger between the back of the MoBo and the case standoff!!!!!!

Any ideas how to "nurse" this 1090 to 4Ghz??? It seems to need L O A D S more VCore than my 1055T to get to the same clock and even @3760Mhz it is kicking out 56c (on a H70) @1.43v........ He's been running it at 3900Mhz with 1.50v for as long as i can remember. (with loads of CPU/NB volts to!!). Do you think he might have degraded it as it just hits a wall at 3.9 and going from 1.43v > 1.52v does nothing........ Figured the 1090's were binned to be better clockers imho if i had this CPU i would be........ You know:mad:.

Also when idle looking at coretemp core 6 has a constant 30%> usage while the others bounce around bellow 10% etc the only difference between our windows installs is that he installed the service pack i didn't. We have looked for viruses malware the lot!! And can find nothing to explain this 30% load when doing nothing at the desktop any ideas??

Thanx.

Have you checked your task manager to see what is using it, if that doesn't show anything up then try process explorer.

As for your warped motherbaord, not good, it could have overheated or something and warped it that way.

Shouldn't you be more concerned about getting your northbridge up a lot more rather than your CPU core? Do you have some screen prints at all and have you updated the BIOS yet?

Hi buddy not at my bro's house so can't try anything at the moment. Do you think it is possible that the shear heat the CPU has been pumping out could of warped the MoBo?? He has an old ThermalTake Armor case with no exhaust (well one 120mm which th H70 uses as intake) and they like the central heating on "KILL" so i would say it has spent it's life at 55c+

My bro says he has looked at most of the things you would look at to figure the high idle usage (he knows more about Windows than me so i do think he has tried no doubt!). He also has a G15 keyboard and a Razor mouse (not sure which!) do you think any of the software could be to blame?).

It really is bizarre as you can watch the other cores going 1%>5%>2% then core 6 is going 30%>43%>50%!!

Thanx.

Definately not software, I really don't think 50 - 60c could have warped that board to be honest. He's not got it next to a radiator or something has he?

No not that close to the radiator:D. CPU stepping is CCBBE CB 1015GPMW (i don't know if that helps at all:D). Very weird imho although we share the same MoBo DDR3 and basic CPU family's it's like both ends of the spectrum! my 1055T hits 4Ghz with 1.38v and his 1090T struggles to make 3.9Ghz. He is looking at purchasing another case for better cooling....... Just hope the bent MoBo will be able to be screwed down. That being my biggest concern as to how that could have become so warped.

Thanx.

No clue what might have warped the board that badly, only time I've had that happen is running one caseless on a box, hah. Though, about drastic differences in Phenom family overclocks, that's fairly normal I'd say. I've seen lots of Phenoms that just can't OC up to 4.0 without a ridiculous amount of vCore, my own included. My chip had weird scaling issues, where it took 1.5v to get to 4.0, and then it could just keep clocking afterward, up to 4.2, past that it needs 1.55v+ to get to 4.4. A newer motherboard seemed to change it slightly (1.475), but nothing drastic there. Question, how are you overclocking it? Multiplier only or a mix of multi and FSB (ref)? That can make a difference depending on the chip.

trying both tbh left it at 12.5 x 300 for 3750Mhz @ 1.48v my bro said it was still priming away when he got in then when i got down to see he rebooted and it BsOD'ed before Windows booted up (IRQ LESS THAN EQUAL) WITH THE SAME SETTINGS!!! It also BSoD's MEMORY MANAGEMENT alot (DDR3 @ 1600 1.65v default basically!). The thing is just a nightmare imho as adding VCore don't help....... It just changes the BSoD?!!

Any idea how to straighten a warped MoBo as i'm genuinely worried it will not screw down into his new case correctly. I'm going to pop my DDR3 down now to make sure it ain't the ram doing it so report back later.

Thanx.

Ok tried my DDR3........ Made no difference BUT when i installed his back i tried the black ram slots and tried upping the V's a little (one bump to the VCore an one to the CPU/NB) and set it to 3.9Ghz and it posted AND booted to the desktop!!!! i then preceded to run prime95 blend 6 threads and let it run for about 5 mins to get a rough guide and it seemed fine SO....... I rebooted and entered into the BIOS to mess then changed my mind then exited without saving got to windows and ran Prime..... BSoD in seconds (IRQ LESS THAN EQUAL!!!) what gives:mad:mad.gif

Just about done imho without some crazy VCore this puppy won't perform and i just can't figure it out (works fine > reboot FAIL!! with same settings?!!).

Seems to prefer HTT overclocking imho.

Thanx.

Yeah its a real stinker imho. He has settled for 3760Mhz with a turbo of 4050Mhz. One other thing we noticed in task manager core 6 has a constant 30%> usage even when idle at the desktop!! Sometimes spiking to 50%+ when doing NOTHING. My bro is meticulous with virus/malware scans and can find nothing at all. All the other cores show the usual 2%/5% bouncing around. But core 6 NEVER drops bellow 30%?!!

We can find NO process hogging the core or any "rogue" app causing it and it has been doing this for as long as we can remember! Any ideas what it might be? My bro is quite Windows savvy and can't find the cause.

Thanx.
