Seeking advice for HD streaming hardware (server to HTPC)

Thread Starter
Hello,

I've run into a bit of a problem with my home network and I'm seeking some advice. Before a recent move, my entire home network was wired so I had no issues streaming HD content. Since the move, everything streams fine with the exception of HD content. My connection runs from the wall to the FIOS Actiontec then to my Netgear WNDR3700. I use the Netgear as my WAP and gigabit switch. Hardwired to the Netgear is my home file server and a desktop. Wirelessly I have two HTPCs connected using ASUS PCE-N15 300/300mbps wireless adapters. So, my question is what should I look to replace the ASUS wireless adapters with? The two options I was thinking of was a dual band wireless adapter and make use of the 5GHz bank such as this TP-LINK. The other option was using a powerline adapter such as this TRENDnet Powerline 500.

Does anyone have any experience with these products or something similar that can successfully stream HD content without the studdering that I was experiencing with the ASUS wireless adapter? I know that hard wiring the network would be THE best option, but it's just not something that can be done at this time.

Thanks!

Hello, how far is the wireless going to go? and is it concrete walls/floors or tree?

I found out that when streaming over the wireless network it was best to use 2,4Ghz insted of the 5Ghz, but that would all depend on the building and distance from the router.

But ye, will do a HD movie stream over the whireless tomorrow and see if it lags now or what, as i havnt used it for HD movies yet!, will let you know what kind of setup i got after i have tested it tomorrow.

Regards,
Maker

Woa back up a bit. You said you moved? Have you checked for Wi-Fi channel interference at your new home?

I'd fire up inSSIDer and check for interference first. It's free and might help.

I could only ever barely get enough bandwidth over wifi to play 720p rips.

Give it a cord if at all plausible.
The powerline adapter should be able to suffice.
