Availability of Intel Xeon E5-1650

Hello,
I wonder if there are some happy owners of E5-1650 over here who can comment on how hard it was for them to get hold of this marvellous processor. I cannot seem to find it being offered in any store on the internet...are they no longer produced or in very limited suppy?
Thanks!

You already answered. If they are that hard to find, price gouging can take effect.
Might have to check with stores & see if one can be special ordered, they aren't cheap though. Looks like Intels tray price was close to $600.

They're Xeons so these are often in limited supply to consumers since most Xeons are allocated to OEMs and ODMs.

Server parts.... it's a world where reliable and replaceable parts helps you make money. Price and cost is subjective.

I think I can shed a little light on this. I often have to build workstations for the business I work for. I recently switched them over to xeon's for ECC memory support. They deal with medium to large CAD models as part of a civil engineering firm. From the feedback it seems they feel this set up has been more reliable for them.

While I can't comment on the E5-1650 exactly, I have purchased the E5-1620's and the E5-1660 before it was available on newegg.

One of the 1620's I found used on eBay because people take them out of OEM machines which the the most common way of finding them. IF you want to order an OEM machine its not hard to have them configured with the 1650. The reason they are more difficult to find is because they just want you to purchase the E5-1660 and be done with it (crap in my opinion) and that is why is the only one you can find in a box.

That doesn't mean you can't find them brand new. I don't know if you have something available in your area, but one of the computer stores around here is an Intel partner and stated they were able to order any of the E5 processors as they sometimes put them into machines for their clients. I don't know about that specific machine, but as workstations go I am comfortable building my own and saving the money! Try to find an Intel partner who can special order you the part (it may take a minute for them to get it in) or hope to find one that has been taken out of a machine on eBay. (Edit: at a reasonable price, of course)

that is a very helpful suggestion......I was wondering how you mitgh rate a custom build by yourself against the ones doen by the manifacturers.....can I biuld a pc that can be as reliable?
I believe it is possible. At least, the engineers I have built for have not complained. I would say if reliability is your goal, go with a good server board.
I've used this and it has been great for me.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182336

Check the manufacturers website for the product to look up ECC ram that they recommend. I remember Newegg not having any, but they may now.

Really, I don't see why it isn't possible to build just as reliable as a machine. Also allows for future up upgrades more easily.

Also, what kind of software are you running?
