7970 and 3 monitors; Won't recognize all 3.

Thread Starter
I'm trying to help a Reddit user who has a 7970 and is having problems getting their 3 monitors to be recognized. They have a reference 7970, and have one monitor hooked up through DVI port to DVI cable, another through HDMI port with a DVI adapter, and lastly an active StarTech mDP to DVI adapter. The main DVI to DVI monitor is one of the 27" Korean IPS monitors, and the other two are 1280x1024 monitors. But the monitor with the active mDP adapter is giving an error "display link problem has been found and the requested resolution and/or refresh rate could not be set.

Now, I'm not sure but I think I remember reading when I got my 7970 when they first came out, that with 3 monitors, you can't use 3 different kinds of outputs. You wouldn't be able to use DVI\HDMI\mDP out on the card, it would need to be DVI\mDP\mDP. Is there any truth to that, and could that be what's causing the issue? Or is my brain making things up that I didn't really read?

Just looking for some advice to try and help a guy out. Thanks smile.gif

There is no truth to that. The DVI clock (HDMI is also on this clock) can output two monitors on its own, and the DP can output 2 DP signals or using a passive adapter can output the DVI signal too. But 2 monitors on DVI clock and 2 on the DP clock max. Yo me there may be some issue with the active adapter, I use one for my current setup (mine is a sapphire one) and when my friend tried to use it with his 5750 it did not like it at all. Some combinations of cards and active adapters can be awkward.
